C270 CDI (2004 w203)
I've noticed that the temp on my new purchase takes about 12 miles to get up to 70 deg and about 25 m to get to 80 deg.

I presume that the thermostat is 'sticky' ??

Is this an easy DIY job?

cheers

Just swapped mine out on my 270.

Easy job and temp is loads better. Get one from euro parts and use discount code

Merc specialist reckons 3 hours - easy?

Seems along time to do the job took my mechanic less than an hour to swap thermostat on my car . And car should probably be running at a steady 90-92 sounds like its stuck open .

Last thermostat I swapped was on an A series engine, took about 15 mins tops, if they say 3 hrs then must be dismantling half the flipping engine to get at it, in which case what prat designs things that way!

I have just done my c270 cdi one, and it is easy enough.

Just be careful with the fuel breather pipe, and the solid hose underneath the thermostat is fiddly to get back in.

20 mins tops. And I'm no mechanic

MB dealer has quoted £245 to change, plus Star time. He also said he has never seen one fail, so is not convinced it is that...

He also said that the ATF should be changed every 31000 miles (expensive!). Total confused... I thought it was either sealed for life (mad) or once at 37000 m (not quite as mad)????

Service A quote was 240 quid for basically an oil change! does that sound right?

cheers, p

Service a price sounds about right you can lower that price if you supply your own oil.

If I understand you correctly, your MB dealer has never seen a thermostat fail

I'd seriously question that, together with the £245 charge. Why would a thermostat change need a Star session?

because he said in 9 years he's never seen one fail and other thing can cause the symptoms ??

Spoke to another MB dealer: hese do not need to have the ATF changed becuase the clutch plates are harder wearing than the later boxes. He id then go on to say that if it was his car he would have it done.. cost = £305, is that ok????

And he also said it is most likely thermostat...

The dealers are talking bs. Change the ATF every 40k. Change the stat too. They do fail and we have done plenty.

Go to a specialist.

recommended specialist in Yorkshire (around Leeds/York)

Hi

Thanks for the feedback. I have to say, the MB techs did not instill confidence. And the specialist I contacted said 3 hrs, which seems excessive. I don't have a garage so I don't really want to do this myself.

So does anyone know of a MB specialist in Yorkshire, preferably in the Leeds or York area? I was thinking of having the ATF fluid done, but would like to save a bit over the 305 quid quoted by MB themselves.

Thanks very much :thumb:

To change the stat you'll need only open the hood :D. Of course you'll loose some coolant to the ground if not draining it properly, but not much. No special tools needed (every MB DIY-man has male and female torx socket set, right? ;)) except right lenght torx socket, that the bolt can be opened (limited space if rail is not removed). BTW one stat housing hole is usually without thread, it's done with bolt during tightening...

Easy DIY job... and yours does need changing if takes that long to get up to operating temperature.

But if MB and a MB specialist say it is 2 (??) hours labour, then surely that is not a simple DIY job? Personally I don't like having my neighbours watching me... I will take it somewhere. Also, there is always the risk of a snapped bolt etc, just can't be ****d with all that agro these days :)

A thermostat change is about the easiest DIY job which actually involves a bit of dismantling. Any DIYer competent enough to own the tools can do it in under an hour.

A fully equipped MB dealership charging more than half an hour for labour is taking the ************************

Do it yourself. If you lived closer I would have done it for you for free. Lol
