EQA As Next Car?

A Luddite whilst now gradually accepting of electric cars – mainly because my wife may buy one. She seems to like the A35 or EQA whilst yet to drive either (appreciate that almost at 2 ends of the spectrum).

Upto 2-year-old cars seem great value whilst acknowledge that pay more for the premium plus.

My head likes the EQA – simply and solely (!) because it can go through the business and makes most sense financially.

Would appreciate some advice please, essentially:
  • Is the 350 that much better than a 250/250+ (mostly local journeys upto 12 miles thus range not key. Exceptional 140mile round trip once a month).
  • Are there any other similar type of cars to consider from other manufacturers (technology and gadgets are not high on her list).
  • Any reliability issues wrt EQA that should be aware over.

As a quick note:

If you intend to frequently make long journeys in the car, I would look at the charging speed as well, I.e. not only at battery capacity and WLTP range.

If I am not mistaken, then these cars are limited to 100kW, which means they make great city cars, but not ideal for frequent long motorway drives.

I might have missed something here, but the OP is looking at a car for 12 mile local journeys and once a month, a trip of 140 miles.

No need to base the purchase on charging speeds for those circumstances, IMHO :)

To me, EQA seems the more sensible choice for this sort of usage :thumb:

True. BTW, My comments are also generally aimed at people who might be reading these thread in future, giving a fuller picture, where possible.

That’s fair enough, but to put it into context the MB spec shows a 10-80% charge taking 35 minutes if you needed to use public rapid charging - to me that’s not a deal breaker as most will rarely use this option anyway.

A 42.2 will suit you perfectly, thank me later

The only time that I had the opportunity to benefit from super-fast charging was last year when travelling to Switzerland through France, and that's in 4 years of EV ownership.

Having said that, I think that the charging speed is often not considered, mainly through ignorance, and in my view people who buy an EV should be aware of all relevant aspects so that they can make an informed decision.

That’s sort of my point though.

The OP has already laid his cards on the table - usage 12 mile local trips and a 140 mile round trip once a month.

It would be like saying once every four years you needed to pick up a wardrobe from ikea so always drive a large estate car or something :)

In other words, if the OP likes the EQA, a 35 minute charge time for a hypothetical fast charge stop if ever needed isn’t really a parameter that should discourage a purchase, IMHO :thumb:

You have to test drive some to form a view, and then track down some users.

My most recent test drive was the EQC which I “thought” would be a quality vehicle, albeit less energy rnefficient. Typically 2-2.5 miles / kWh.

What I didn’t expect was that it would be a wobbly thing. Back to the drawing board.

Fine for those who like such things but not for me, thank you.

And generally disregard any iCE driver who will tell you that EVs all catch fire / run out of electricity / can’t be maintained. Generally they’re talking through their hat.

Dealers will be delighted to let you try their EVs. They’re desperate to get them sold on.

Think the EQA 200/250+ is a no brainer, for your usage. Unless you particularly want the extra grunt of the 350. Both will be very similarly equipped. Apparently the
new MGS5 is very good, particularly in Trophy spec, check it out. 🙂👍
