939369F2-3F6C-4665-9698-B1CC9BEA7A5A.jpeg Today this bigger, older brother arrived... I have nicknamed it rusty and it’s a fairly rare Bentley turbo R.

Issues I have noticed so far are:

Both front arches, a pillars, passenger doors around the handles and boot lid need paint due to rust.

The front driver and passenger foot wells are swimming pools due to a leaky windscreen (yes that is duct tape holding the trim on the passenger corner), and both front door seals being inadequate.

Front passenger and rear driver door windows don’t work.

Radio reception is very poor, it just cuts in and out.

Other than that it’s mechanically and electrically very good, an absolute brute to drive, the brakes are surprisingly good and other than not having massaging seats it has all the mod cons you could need (cruise control, two stage heated seats etc!)

IIRC from talking to a local RR/Bentley specialist quite some time ago the front windscreen pillars where they join the bulkhead are a known weak spot on these. The unpleasant reality being that in the unfortunate event of rolling such a car on its roof its likely to collapse.:(

My neighbour has a 1991 Turbo R.. it's been sat 5 odd years, they got it running last year and sounded great!

As said corrosion around the windscreen front and rear and arches... wonder if they used the same metal and paint as the W220 production line!

He recently picked up a 06 silver Turbo R with 45k on the clock paid around 42k for it.. rust bubbling up around the rear number plate holder!

Good luck with it..love the Coupé.

It was a good price! It had over £5000 spent on its service at a specialist last year, most of the issues are just cosmetic.

Looks like the water ingress isn’t as bad as I initially thought, I have stripped out the underlay and dried it all out, no more water has collected in the foot wells after some light rain. However a blast with a pressure washer around the doors some water started to accumulate. I’ve ordered a set of secondary door seals which should fix this issue.

I have diagnosed the window issue on the front passenger window, a plastic part of the motor had broken up. A new one along with a cog was £20 from flying spares. Hopefully I’ll get it fitted today.

I’ve ordered a new window seal and chrome trim for the windscreen, just waiting on the body shop to come back with a price for paint.

I’ve also started to make progress on cleaning the interior, for pictures give me a follow on Instagram, my username is m2287a.

Hi there M2287 I've been hankering after a Bentley Turbo R for a while now, mid '90s hopefully. Is there anything that you know of, which should be avoided like the plague ?

I've seen some Turbo R's very low in price £5 to £10,000 - very tempting.

For example : 1990 G BENTLEY TURBO R 6.8 TURBO R 4D AUTO | eBay

Nice. I've always had a hankering for one but I am not brave enough to take one on.

We already know you are brave! :D

As said - keep us posted...

I found myself looking at your other steed opportunities the other day - some bargains out there buying-wise.

Bentley Continental 6.0 W12 GT 2dr 4WD - £24,995

that is lovely!! do it!

As much as I love them - I'd want a V8. I'm also not brave enough to take on a W12!!!

I'd be more inclined to take on a BTR if they are sub-£10k to buy though.

My advice is don’t spend what you don’t mind loosing, you can pay 10k for one of these and need to spend 10k on it if you can’t DIY. This one has had serious mega bucks spent on it and still has these issues.

They all rust everywhere, have poor electrics, parts are expensive and specialists are hard to come by. Have a good read of the Bentley/rolls Royce forums (it’s essentially the same car as the silver spirit).

As you say Bentley specialists are hard to find, where I take my MB is run by a guy who is a Bentley nut, when he sees a S600 he says yes well they copied Bentleys, too far from you but CCC at Colchester know there stuff where Bentleys are concerned and of course MB's

Well I'd probably give this one a miss.....

Good news, the front mechanism is back together and working... bad news, the rear window needs a motor at £150 and the AC compressor has decided to ruin itself, I’m hoping it’s the pulley so I don’t have to replace the whole unit.

Some air con specialists will repair the compressor, shame the one I know is a little too far from you,Intocool at Burnham on Crouch Essex, last time I was there they had repaired a two of their customers compressors saving them lots.

Good to know, thanks! I travel all over for work so it’s not too much of an issue. I have had a look on eBay and there are lots of secondhand ones for £150ish which isn’t too bad. It was getting dark so I didn’t look into it much, it may not even be the AC but it’s more than likely so.

Also just got a motor for the rear window, £38 posted!
