I have recently bought a 2004 E320 CDi and sometimes I get an error message on the computer saying "lamp cornering" does anybody know what is that?

I took it to mercedes to have a quick look at it and they checked the front headlights and said everything seemed ok but they suspect the motor on the headlamp is chaming sometimes ?

anyway would be great if I could get any help from you guys :)

thanks anyway :)

Regards

Josef.

Well, I would think it is either:

1. The cornering light function (check foglights) playing/not lighting up; or
2. The Dynamic Lights (main lights) that turns in direction of steering.

Surely local MB dealer can hook the car up to STAR and see any codes?!

I would assume your second option. There is a known fault on some active cornering lights units which makes the horizontal movement fail eventually.

If the OP would read the exact message and search the electronics section, he should find owners posting questions about the same issue.

What do i do now then? change the whole lamp or just ignore it.. becuase sometimes the error doesnt come up when i use the car and sometimes it does... :S

and even if i wanted to change the lamp which one is the faulty one? They been tested and it seems they both work fine..according to mercedes.

No error codes stored when they hooked it up to STAR ?

No they said everything worked fine but when they tryed to get rid of the hdlmp" cornering" error it woudnt go.

They suspect its either a loose wire or the motor on the cornering lamp is chaming sometimes.

My suggestion is try another dealer. That's a complete fob off.

Does it not tell which side is faulty? You could try to figure out which side is not working when the malfunction message appears but that would be difficult because I think the lights do not turn when the car is stationary.

The options to fix this would be a complete new head light assembly or someone dismantling the unit to check the wiring.

I'd suggest asking those forum members who have had the same issue (I assume you did find the earlier threads).

Hi guys, many thanks for your help.

No it does not state which side is the faulty one, i'm not sure if the computer is playing up or there is an actual error on one of the head lamps..

I'm going to try another merc garage and see what they say.. I phoned up a couple of merc dealers and they said each headlamp costs about £300 notes plus V.A.T. Also this is mercedes their rate is sky high.

I've tryed testing the car, went on a back road they other day with twisty roads and the headlights seem to work fine when cornering, it's abit weird.

I thought I'll take the battery out of the car for 24hrs to rest everything on the car? and see then.. Do you think its wise or is it going to mess up everything on the car?

Kind Regards

Josef.

A new part should be closer to 1000 Euros (assuming 616 lights):

I assume the car does not indicate the faulty light when it assumes the issue needs to be fixed at a workshop and diagnosed anyway.

If the car was mine, I'd check it against the TSB on active cornering lights.
