Hi guys,
The Merc (w211 e220 facelift, 200Kmiles) is going in limb mode (first time ever as far as i know!) w messages "ESP, cuise control inoperative" and a rough gearbox (only second gear engages). No red lights on dash nor brake faults shown in mb star. Two codes P2008 and P22DD were stored and cleared with star , car was ok for two days then same problem + same codes appeared. Battery voltage supposed to be ok (car shows around 12.1) no undervoltage reported. ( Several months ago had changed certain suspension and steering parts plus tyres. Steering was back then aligned on hunter and new bolts were fitted.) No steering or tyre sensors reported faulty by STAR. Codes were cleared for a second time and car again is ok but for how long? Both times the error appeared after reversing out of a parking space and attempting to shift from R to N/D. Car has an advisory for rear subframe bushes too!!
Garage suggested geabox computer might be at fault. (Lost comm connection sthing with sthing)
I on the other hand suspect that the suspension or the battery is the culprit, but what do I know??!! I am just a web researcher-lol.

Other ideas???? Should I go down the gbox route investigation?

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

I lost ESP, ABS, cruise control, and power steering because of a Reluctor/ magnetic pulse ring (on the rear) being in two parts through corrosion. However, it didn’t screw up my auto box or make the car go into limp mode.
Don’t know if that’s worth checking?

When was the ATF last changed?

Faulty plate in the gearbox?

These gearboxes develop problems with the conductor plate- the internal electrohydraulic interface between the electronic controls and hydraulic valves that control the gear selection- they also suffer from hydraulic fluid leaking from the plug where the electric cables enter the box- this fluid can migrate up this cable which leads to the automatic transmission controller cause weird electrical problems- which may be the source of your ESP/ABS/CRUISE problems also. Time to get the car to a merc specialist familiar with this type of box and its problems.

Thanks guys.
Thank you Grober for the details and vid link.
I will check these gearbox components.
Anyhow, I am getting a much needed new car (w213)- but if I fix it the 211 stays!!

Before doing anything with gearbox and/or tcm i decided to check the battery at a local car electrician. It was the original (!!12 yrs old going on 13. test showed average voltage but too low sthing else-amps perhaps??) so a new was installed (good quality but not oem). The car then has been driven for two days ,~ 40km, no faults yet. Fingers crossed.

Car stuck in limb mode again for nth time!!
(New battery revigorated a lot of systems though!!)
However, i am still not convinced yet it's a gearbox ecu issue since i am getting codes P2008 and P22DD, and there is no oil leak from the plug. Why on earth would a fixed electronic computer go bad with no corossion apparent in its area+ above codes do not point to gearbox?
So do I dish out for a new gearbox computer? (Brand New is approx gbp1000 with install + adoptation. Talking about the ecu in passenger footwell code 0355454232).

Most mercs with engine problems put the gearbox also into limp mode. Id look into wheel speed sensors etc or engine faults first. Alot of copy and paste in these forums from members with no real 1st hand experiences.
