Hello all

Both the E250 and my Alfa are due to venture into Europe this year so im looking for some breakdown/recovery insurance. I use Autoaid in the UK but they have a 15 years old limit for European cover. Which is ok for the E250 but not the Alfa. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Not that either are destined to break down of course!

Must say im very much looking forward to driving on some decent roads for a change!

Cheers!

The above was recommended to me (for UK cover) with the following:

''As far as breakdown insurance is concerned, the best deal you will get is with ADAC (www.adac.de) the German equivalent to the AA. They do Personal Plus cover which covers you for any vehicle anywhere in Europe, including UK, for 84 Euros a year. If you break down in the UK, their agents, the AA, come out to you instead.''

Hmm thanks, that's interesting. I was with the AA for years but got tired of the annual phone calls to halve the renewal cost! I'll take a look at ADAC, thanks!

Presumably you're looking to buy short-term cover for specific trips? We used the RAC for this (they offer a daily rate) when going to see the in-laws in Germany. I don't believe they had an age limit, but obviously you'd need to confirm this is still the case.

I'll have a look, thanks. Id like to do an annual one if i can - i have at least two trips planned so far (three weeks in total) but would like to get back to some more cycling trips to NL, Belgium, Germany, Italy etc as well so a daily rate might start to add up. The E250 is less of a problem to be honest as it's not as old.

Have you looked at your normal car insurance company? They often have deals with breakdown companies especially if it's a specialist insurer.

Good idea - i did actually try to call them earlier (Im with Admiral) but i couldn't get through. I had a nice surprise actually - for the first time in memory my insurance decreased! I was paying £800 for the Merc, Alfa and Abarth, and this year it reduced to £500. Bargain!

I buy my European assistance / recovery from Aviva, as part of my annual insurance policy. For trips of up to 90 days, it's still an insignificant amount.

I never need to claim, of course. Mercedes and BMW's never break down. But it's comforting to have the cover.

Take the speed limits seriously. The police are all over it these days - far more than they used to be - both in town and on the motorways - and the fines are big.

European recovery as part of my NFU insurance for an extra £20. Friend on a tour to Italy with us in a JAG XK had to use the cover and I have to say the service was absolutely brilliant at Lake Garda from them so I will pay the extra even though I will have the cover from Mercedes under its service contract.

This is the Nationwide cover for £13 per month , also includes an annual travel insurance

We also have the Nationwide cover. They were excellent a couple of years ago when the 124 dumped its gearbox oil in Italy. Then they used Britannia but its now placed with the AA. Not so sure this is a positive step.
