This is becoming an increasing annoyance to me. Not really because of the waste, more the feeling the manufacturers are trying to dupe me. I feel the same about packaged foods where the container is designed such that it looks much bigger than it is.

Anyway, how about this offering from Duracell…not the best photo but the box could actually fit two layers deep as well.

when I worked for a garden wholesalers we got deliveries of batteries from duracell. each size of battery came on a different pallet. so one pallet for AA one for AAA one for c etc, even if there was only two boxes of batteries they put them on a pallet. one day we had 5 pallets and 20 boxes, four boxes to a pallet one in each corner then stacked and shrinkwrapped. and bear in mind that each of our "bulk" box of batteries was less than the size of a shoe box.

There's a historical reason for bulky retail packaging of items that are small, relatively expensive, and generally in demand. The other item used to be razor blades, though these days they are not so much in demand, which leaves only batteries in this category. This is also the reason why some shops keep the batteries near the till.

BTW, I buy batteries online NOT in retail packaging, see for example:

I've recently bought Procell AAA batteries, 10 per box in minimal packaging, excellent, will look for them rather than Duracell next time I need batteries!
