Exhaust gas from breather maybe EGR

Hi,

I have spoken to a mechanic and he suggested that the white smoke coming from the breather pipe is probably exhaust gases. He thought it may be the EGR blocked.

I have taken out the EGR (which was no mean feat) and the gases are still coming out of the PCV where the breather pipe connects. This leads me to think that it may not be the EGR valve.

I have read on other forums for other vehicles that it could be the head gasket, and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to whether that could be the case? or if anyone has had this?

Thanks in advance
Paul

Combustion gases from CHG leakage normally end up in the coolant -scum in the header tank/ overpressure or coolant ends up in the oil white emulsion streaks in the black oil. Excessive crankcase gases might indicate worn piston rings- what's the engine mileage? Time for a cylinder compression test perhaps?

Valve seals??
Has the motor been stood unused for a significant period?

It's probably just a broken PCV, that's what I had (OM642). It's both a vacuum leak and a very slight oil leak. They all seem to fall apart after 100k miles. I got a few more MPG after swapping it out for a new one from MB.

I'd change the PCV...

Hi, Ive already swapped the PCV. It had an engine swap about a year ago that was supposed to be 78k. Its not been stood for any length of time.

Would worn piston rings get exhaust gases into the crankcase? How big a job is it do the rings on the vito? Id be taking it to a garage, but just wnat to get an idea of whether its a big job?!?
Thanks for the replies

Engine mileage? Before starting to take the engine appart you should get a cylinder compression test done- its a relatively simple test which would indicate CHG failure, valve seat leakage, or worn piston rings.
