It would look like I have to change my Manifold gasket and replace a couple of studs on a W124 2ltr Petrol engine in the very near future. Would it be worth doing a howto? (if I cant get at a broken stud then its a head off job  ) Would anyone find it usefull?

I just wondered whether THIS would be any use to you... Its a shame it didnt come up a few weeks ago mind :(

Id say do a how to. It may not be relevant to some people but documenting the removal of somethings along the way might be relevant too someone elses situation if you get my drift ;)

Ok then, I will do a howto.

Spike Thanks for the thread, <cough> I already have a spare Cyl Head ;)

Hi Ian

ancient history now, but I had a leak around manifold on E220 estate, took it to a Merc specialist ( still £50ph) and they found one stud sheared off and missing 3 nuts.
They said it would be head off, £800 min, another ex merc set up said the same.

Took it to a local garage who services tractors, cars, Merc vans etc and he fixed the broken stud without taking head off for about £150 - sounds like the others weren't trying hard enough

Even the rear studs on the exhaust manifild can be removed if you try hard enough. Last resort is to arc weld a nut on the visible shaft. But you could also use an angled attachment for a drill. Drill it out then use thread extractor. Very pleased though that you got it sorted at what could be deemed a reasonable price. Well Done
