Afternoon all.

Had my car in for its MOT this morning (Inchcape Merc in Nottingham). To my surprise it failed first time around on emissions and I was asked the question 'Has it been remapped or modified?', of course I said 'No' because I bought it as a bone stock car, or at least I thought I did.

Turns out that the emissions were too high because of an exhaust leak - which has now been fixed and it passed its MOT. However, it would appear that the previous owner of my car deleted the rear mufflers and got a not so competent person to weld the tailpipes back on (hence the leak). The service guy said 'This is why is sounds as loud as it does', which made me smile as it really isn't that loud (at least not as loud as my C63 was). Anyway, this now explains why my exhaust button has no effect when pressed, which I had wondered about, but thought 'It'll be because of the OPF's in the downpipes'.

Which brings me to my question.

Given I currently seem to have an exhaust with only the OPF's and the cat(s) providing any sound deadening, if I were to change the exhaust to something else (which I have thought about doing since buying the car last year), would it actually be any louder? Or are there other things I can do to enhance the sound?

Obviously its a big outlay and I don't want to be spending the thick end of £4k on an exhaust (looking at a Valvetronic titanium setup) where the only advantage is weight saving (although this great in its own way of course).

Any and all opinions welcome, there are no wrong answers here :)

Id go with either an IPE valved or the Akrapovic
I can't believe you can buy a car of that value and not even know 😉

From the videos I've seen so far, the Akrapovic didn't really do it for me. The iPE sounds fun but the Valvetronic sounds ridiculously good:

I agree with the valtronic it does sound good but it also needs the ASR valve module and as you haven't got the original valves it can become very expensive but worth it in the end im sure 😉

That exhaust comes with valved mufflers - but my question is, just how good is it likely to sound with the original downpipes and cats installed. I've asked them for links to any videos/customer cars they might have done...

Also that 1 doesn't have any cats so would it need coding out etc plus mot time ,you will need a very friendly chap I see there is a choice for sports cat's at £1k extra but how would that effect sound compared to the video

You beat me too it 🤣

A full custom exhaust change would be my plan using 3" 409 stainless steel pipes and a single or double H pipe configuration on W213 E63. I will have the CATS replaced with custom heat shield in the V along with resonator and muffler delete.

Hopefully should do the trick and within budget🙂

A valved system in theory makes sense but the outlay is problematic ofcourse. I've had a valved iPE system on my 212 and in quiet mode it can barely be heard , bet it would ace any noise and emissions test too with the valves closed. Different car to the w213. I cant imagine an aftermarket exhaust is much better than AMG performance exhaust which is amazing. For sound improvement youd need to be taking resonators and cats and OPF out for an improvement over stock by my reckoning

Here's iPE catback I took today when someone came to look at my car to buy it

That sounds quiet to me obviously its louder under load and I agree ref the AMG performance exhaust but the OP hasn't got a stock exhaust its been butched hense a new complete system is needed would sport cats be an option with valved mufflers

It's very very loud , but doesn't get captured properly on my phone camera for some reason. Sounds a bit more like the real thing with good headphones but still miss the intensity completely on the recordings. I'll use a go pro next time someone comes to disturb my neighbours next time

I didnt articulate it particularly well but its worth scouring junkyards online for stock back boxes... there's got to be a few w213s that have been scrapped. Hopefully that will cost in the 100s not 1000s.

Sorry I think I've probably confused everyone at this stage. I'm after a louder setup than I have now, but it still needs to remain completely legal, removing CATS and OPF's is a non-starter obviously. I'd like to have the ability to make it quiet if required (i.e valved), which is particularly important if it's crazily loud at anything other than WOT. But - not a deal breaker if you see what I mean.

Depending on costs and aggravation involved, I may choose not do anything with it, other than get the welds tidied up. The car sounds pretty good as it is to be fair (will try and get a video of it in the next couple of days and post it here) but to my ears it really needs more volume.

For reference, each side looks like this right now (complete with crude sealant application, courtesy of Inchcape Mercedes Benz).
