As the title really. Who owns or has in the past the s211 e63 and what did you think of it. There are a couple of what seem like nice examples for sale at the minute, they look stunning but there's the nagging fear of running costs like brakes and dreaded engine issues. I realise there's danger of dragging up the age old e55 vs e63 which is like to avoid, I've read loads of those threads and see it can annoy people but simply what are your thoughts on the e63 in isolation not comparison. Thanks

I’ve driven but not owned the W211 E 63, but I have plenty of experience of owning cars with the M156 engine found in it.

Don’t be put off by the scare stories. They’re all true, but they’re not as common as the Internet would have you believe.

Be fussy and buy a car which has an impeccable service history, and with preventative maintenance already done.

Or if you fancy taking the risk then buy without, but make sure you have a sufficient reserve to do it yourself.

The W211 E 63 has a nice blend of the softer more subtle supersaloon, with the later engine. A bit of a best of both car.

Good luck with your search 👍🏻

Thanks for your comments. Certainly not a done deal but they're so nice it's hard to not be tempted. Do you have any idea of the cost of preventative work or remedial work should the worst present it's self. Ive been trying to find the parts cost for head bolts and only found an American site.

Labour will be the biggest influence on cost. I had a full top-end rebuild on one of mine, but I had it done at the main dealer and so will be more expensive than a specialist. However which bits you replace will have an impact too.

If you replace the head bolts or tappets then I would say do them all. However things like the variable valve timing controls and cams may not need to be replaced unless there’s a fault or you’re fussy.

From memory cams are around £600 each (and there are four) and and controllers are also around £600 (and again there are four). So depending upon whether you replace none - or all - then the price varies a lot!

A reserve of £5000 ought to deal with most eventualities on the engine. Factor it into the purchase price though, so that psychologically the cost has been incurred on day 1, ao you’ll not gutted if you do it.
