On our local news they have just reported that Torquay Police have just installed Number Recognition Equipment into all the council run CCTV camera's. This has been done with a Home Office Grant to test the equipment and see if it is viable. If it gets approval it is hoped to be installed nationwide.
I have seen Police Patrol vehicles with this equipment, but this is something completely new down here. I am however most surprised that it is not already approved?
(Paging Plodd) I am not renowned for believing everything that I hear or read
The equipment only has access to the Police National Computer, and a Police Officer both works it and makes the on the spot decision of what vehicles to stop.
I should imagine we will now not have ANY Police Officers on our streets, they will all be at the beck and call of the CCTV camera's. (I am not criticising this, more a plea for more Police Officers on our streets)
Regards,
John
