A220 AMG Line Premium Plus 2019
Hi All
I am a newbie so please bear with me.
I am looking for some advice on my recent terrible experience whilst driving my A220 AMG Line Premium Plus car, it is only 12 months old, I bought second hand from a reputable dealer, it has the full warranty on it.
So as I was driving along a quiet road with nothing overhead and no other traffic, there was an explosion, that frightened me to death, the panoramic sunroof had had exploded for no apparent reason.
It got took the the mercedes retailer, who said that it was not covered under the warranty. I took my complaint to Mercedes head office, who have given me their answer, they can find nothing wrong with it and so it is not covered.
I have done some research and found it happens a lot, and to other manufacturers too.
My question is, has it happened to other members and what was the outcome.
In the USA there has been a law suit which has partially been successful.
I am sure that my insurance will cover it but why should I claim when there is clearly a problem with panoramic sunroof's.
Any advice will be greatly welcomed.
Thank you.

I had a sunroof on a Hyundai shatter whilst sitting outside my house several years ago. I claimed under the glass insurance and just paid the excess. It was out of warranty at the time if I recall.

Any glass surface on the car might be weakened by a crack from a flying stone, and once the glass has shattered there's no way of proving that it didn't have a minute crack or chip beforehand.

And even when it seems to be a common fault, it will be very difficult to demonstrate it unless you happen to be in possession on an internal WIS TSB confirming this issue.

Claiming off our car insurance policy is the best way forward.

Same thing happened to my daughters Jag. They said it wasn’t covered by the warranty as there is no way of telling something cause the break like a stone.
Incidentally her insurance didn’t cover glass roofs either. Not sure what the price was but it wasn’t cheap that’s for sure. Try your insurance though might be worth a go, good luck.

Omg this reminds me of the late 80s. I was walking past a Ford escort hatchback as the tailgate window exploded. (very hot day)
A woman ran out of her house and swore I'd smashed it lol. Nightmare telling her to bugger off 🤣

A lot of insurances now exclude Pano roof glass, because of the replacement costs and the unexplained exploding glass scenario.
Not any help for the O/P, But isn't there some sort of film that could be applied to the glass to deter the possibility of stone chips etc. as I expect the glass itself wont be cheap.
O/P hope your insurance covers you're costs.
