Extending the Warranty

Hi,

My new car warranty on the SL is coming to an end. The offer on the table from the dealer is:

1. Free Vehicle inspection to ensure that all items that should be covered under existing warranty have been carried out.

2. Extending the warranty for another year = £920

I would be interested in thoughts on whether extending it is a good investment - my view is that if something REALLY major goes wrong Merc will fix it as they have such a bad reputation for reliability/service etc. I also saw in a recent car magazine that the CEO more or less said that. Clearly a slightly risky assumption, but I have looked after the car well, its only done 16k miles.

Comments?

It is a decision only you can make, but by crikey that sounds very expensive. There are numerous warranties available online and my personal view is not to go for the Mercedes-Benz warranty.

Good luck with your decision,
John

BMW warranties have just had a price hike as well - it's now in the region of that figure for the larger cars, which is expensive, but in my opinion worth it if you do a lot of miles and have a car that is more than a few years old - they generally tend to pay for themselves.

Taking into account how much it would cost to put right a major problem with your car, I would be inclined to have some sort of warranty. Whether you go for the dealer one is a personal decision.

How long do you plan on keeping it? You've done roughly 5k miles a year - for 3 years?

At that rate in another 6 years it will only be a 45k mile car; on top of regular servicing, tyres etc you will have spent at least another £6000?

No way, in my personal opinion!
