I'm after one of these any recomendations, just to save pics music etc without clogging up my computer?

There are many choice... and depnds on your budget... but best home use external drives at the moment are:

1. Western Digital MY BOOK range
2. LACIE Big Disk

I have both and for your requirements the Western Digital My Book would be recommended - you oviously need to decide the size and interface requirements.

If speed is no issue then USB2 will be fine for normal use - else you can use the Firewire 400 provided your PC has a firewire port or even Firewire 800 if you need high speed (not likely)

good luck,

Remember that any disk can fail at any time - if you're keeping original pictures etc. on an external drive you need to have backup copies somewhere else.

I keep everything on my C: drive, and use an external USB 2 hard drive for taking backups.

I have a Buffalo TeraStation (only 750GB with RAID5) and I just bought a LaCie 500GB external drive to hang off the back of it for other archiving (not protected by RAID).

The TeraStation might seem like overkill but it's speedy, reliable, is compatible with anything else on the network (samba/ftp shares) so no additional software needed, will take 4 external drives or printers by USB (works as print server) supports gigabit ethernet and also PCast for media players.

I always keep at least 2 copies of my important pics and docs...

In fact - you can get 4.7Gb on a single layer DVD-R - and DVD' cost about 10 for 100 - its always handy to burn to a DVD as well as putting them on an external drive.

I get HP branded DVDs from H E R E - The DATAWRITE's aren't bad - but I know the HP ones are excellent and have never had an failures with them...

Looking for a RAID controler card, is this one any good?

Or do people have a better option, interested in equiping my PC with RAID5

LaCie dont make anything ... all they do is put stickers on really evil quality.

Miro,

Not quite the case. Like every brand, there are people who complain loudly about failures online, who are normally outnumbered by the happy people with nothing to say.

Lacie is a respectable brand, which just like every other has issues from time to time.

(I don't have any Lacie products, so I am not being a fanboy. Just think your comment was a bit over the top.)
