Should they be shutdown until Friday?

It may help quell the violence...and means of comms.

Wouldn't that be punishing the masses for what would be a tiny majority? If you went down that road you'd also need to shut down SMS services, phone calling and blackberry messaging...

From what I gather it's Blackberry broadcast - whatever that is..

I'm not sure it's as easy as shutting it down. The horse has bolted and the police now need to work out how to deal with it.

I'm sure it's a very real problem with mobs of people being able to easily arrange to meet up in locations leaving Police inteligence to catch up.

BB messaging is the preferred method because of the security (all messages sent via BB messenger are encrypted by default). I can't think that shutting down social networking and messaging would make much difference, they would just call each other instead using the phone.

If you're going down this route surely closing the closest mobile transmitters would achieve a better result?

Why not just get rid of Twatter and Fakebook altogether. Maybe the world would be a better place without antisocial media.
