Can someone confirm the make / model of original Factory fitted tyres for a 2012 W212 E220 CDI BE with 245/56/17 wheels please? and what tyres can you recommend now? I have Hankook Ventus S1 and the car drives terribly!!

No idea what make of tyres your car would have from the factory, maybe Continentals. I have had Hankook and Conti's currently on Dunlop Sport RT. Best tyres I have had all round on the CLK.

It would have been a premium brand: Michelin, Continental, Pirelli being most likely. If you stick with those then you won’t go far wrong.

It used to say on the data card what tyres were fitted at the factory, don’t know if that’s still the case.

It would have been a premium brand: Michelin, Continental, Pirelli being most likely. If you stick with those then you won’t go far wrong.

Steering alignment, play in ball joints, old dampers etc could be your problem. Also check tyre pressures.

Can't help the OP on 17" tyres but my 2011 on 18's (sport package) came with Pirelli P-Zero MO (mercedes specific). I found I could spin the rears up at 50 on a wet dual carriageway on kick down (only an E250 CDI!) so switched to Michelin Pilot sports - amazing tyre, cornered well, put the power down well but hurt the mpg a little and wore out in 1 year (around 11k miles!). I went back to the Pirelli P-zero MO and got better mpg again but they don't feel quite as connected to the road but not terrible. the previous set got me 20k miles and were not new when I got the car.

My 2012 E350, on 17", was originally supplied with Michelin Primacy tyres.

Other new MBs, since 2003, have varied between Michelin and Continental, although I think some might now be supplied with other brands. Personally, I've always stuck with Michelin or Continental on the MBs.

Has it always driven 'terribly' ? Is the car new to you ? I would suggest checking tyre pressures and close visual inspection of all tyres and a 4 wheel alignment/wheel bearing play etc. If the tyres look good maybe a rebalance of all 4 wheels ?

Could you define 'drives terribly ...' ?

Don't just put new tyres on it until you have checked everything else , unless the current tyres are obviously visibly worn/bad.

Back in the days of nearly everything being RWD (Cortinas, Capris etc) we all used to put heavy stuff in the boot in the winter when conditions were not great. I remember my dad putting backs of cement in the boot of the Mk2 Escort. Fine until you DID loose traction.then you had loads more weight to stop moving.......so probably not the greatest idea!!!

I usually stay away from branded tyre places as i dont much rate the operatives.

However for the price i will give them a go. Hopefully they dont screw up my wheels

Due to EU regulations, the car manufacturers are, I think, obliged to use a variety of manufacturers on their cars in proportion to market share or some similar formula. So you can find different tyres fitted on e.g. definitely Golfs depending on month of manufacture in the year. No idea how this specifically applies to the W class, but it might not just be one type of tyre.

So, are we just going down the road of recommending different types of new tyre for the OP to fit without even finding out what 'Drives terribly' means or whether the rest of the car is bent ?
