Just been quoted £15k for a new HV battery replacement. A scandal if ever there was one.
I am reaching out to try and locate a used replacement, or indeed a repairer. My searches have identified many that will do such work on Toyota's, Lexus's etc etc, but nothing for Mercedes.
If there is anyone who can assist, it would be very much appreciated.

The vehicle is a 63 plate S400L, the diagnosis is one failed cell.
Part Number; 222 340 37 00

I have been a Mercedes driver for 30+ years, thought it was a good idea to try and be a little green while still driving one of the greatest luxury cars ever made.
This apparent profiteering by Stuttgart, has left a very bad taste in the mouth.

Thank you.

Might also be worth scouring BMW forums to see if someone has found a solution. 17 mins in ...

Don't Mercedes have a lengthy warranty on the HV side of things?

ETA - apparently not ...

@garywh Oh dear, you are unlucky. Running a hybrid (from any manufacturer) once the hybrid warranty runs out is risky.

In terms of a used replacement, there are quite a few on ebay, although the part numbers are not exactly the same as your one. In addition, there is someone in Warsaw, Poland who is advertising hybrid mercedes batteries (for S and C class) and they state they can also repair hybrid batteries. Might be worth contacting them just to see what they say. If they can repair your battery by changing the failed cell, even with shipping costs, it could work out much cheaper than a brand new one from MB.

Charles Trent in Dorset list used hybrid/EV batteries for a number of different manufacturers (Mitsubishi, Range Rover, Hyundai and more) - worth giving them a call too to see if they ever get MB hybrid batteries in

With respect to a hybrid specialist/repairer, I'm sure you have googled the same ones in the UK that I have found. Might be worth calling them if you haven't already to check if they can work on your car (even if they only list Toyota etc on their website)

Hope this helps.

@whitenemesis 6 years. Same as BMW. Toyota give 5 years on hybrid (unless you get an annual hybrid service every year, in which case you can extend each year up to 15 years max)

Mitsubishi only gave 5 years hybrid warranty on their Outlanders, until 2016 when they changed it to 8 years

Kia 7 years. VW/Audi 8 years. Peugeot 8 years.

And each manufacturer has mileage limits on their hybrid warranties, if those are exceeded first.

@garywh S400 hybrid batteries are also on sale at Aliexpress (I have no idea about the quality, so do your own research with them) but this battery is listed for $3,000

And Lexus, hybrid health check at each service (which if done at the service is FOC otherwise £59) extends the warranty on the system, not just the battery, for 15yrs or 150k miles :thumb:

Thanks for this, its quite bizarre. There are plenty around for the W221 series, but nothing for the W222. Its driving me crazy,

@garywh Apologies. I missed that you have the W222. There is a hybrid battery for W222 from the same seller on Aliexpress but again, not sure if compatible with your car, and it's around £6,800

Might be worth contacting them (and others offering hybrid batteries) and asking to be kept informed when they get a battery in that matches your specs. Your ordeal does sound very frustrating but unless you can get the battery repaired by someone (UK or outside) then it's a case of waiting for a W222 S400h to be written off somewhere in the world and getting first dibs on the battery.

How did you find that? you must have great search skills, i spent plenty of time on their site after you suggested, but did not get that one to jump out at me. I am going to investigate those part numbers. Thanks.

A good reason not to buy hybrid cars ...
It does make the whole environment question a bit laughable, when the battery cant last a third of the life of the rest of the vehicle

This may be dumb question, but... what happens if you don't replace the battery? Can't you just enjoy the car like it was a normal petrol car? The range on battery is very small anyway. And you are unlikely to save £15k worth of fuel over the next few yeaes ..... or does the car not run properly without a fully-functioing HV battery? Of course you'll have an issue when selling the car, but by then many other W222 of the same age will likely have failed batteries anyway.

As tech in cars got more ..er technical so did the types of theft. It's almost impossible to steal the 'radio' from a modern car since the decline of DIN and the move to integrated ICE. We had alloy wheel theft which is still around but not as prevalent, This moved on to steering wheel theft for the airbag. catalytic converter theft is rife.

Are we moving into a time when you might find an almost complete EV stolen and abandoned with just it's battery pack ripped out ?

I sympathise with your predicament, though it's worth noting that many people chose the 'green' option because it was supposed to save them money (in taxation, in fuel, etc), but for those who are really keen on the environment, having to pay more for an environmentally-friendly solution won't be a problem.
