Falken or Kumho winter tyres

Some info here on winter tyres for 2009/2010......Canadian and does not do any testing or give recommendations but good infor on winter tyres available (if you can get through the adverts!)

Both the Falken HS439 and the Kumho KW27 are new this year and seem to include the latest tech....however, they seem to be indicating that the KW27 is more targeted to SUVs, so the Falken may be better??

Do the KW17's come in the size you need?

I gave the kids a lift up the hill to go sledging.......

Then took this on the way down!

No...I need 255/35/18....only the KW27 come in this size from Kumho

I didn't think 10mm would make to much difference. Have you thought of going the other way i.e. narrower and possibly taller? As it would only be for about 4 months, is this an option? It would open up the wider choice available of different makes and prices, plus the narrower tyres would give a better footprint in the snow, as the Monte Carlo rally cars of the 80's!

Thought of this but prefer to stay with MB recommended tyre sizes.....it does not make a lot of difference anyway price wise.

Do you not have a choice of alternatives in your handbook?

For the AMG equipment (wheels) no.
The handbook does say go to 225/45 tyres on 17" rims for winter set up, but that means getting 4 new rims as well as tyres...even then tyres are not a whole lot cheaper, so for occasional use in snow we get in the south-east, it probably makes sense to stick with the 18" wheels and get winter tyres to fit them for safety sake (for the 1st time in GB I fitted winter tyres to my other car, a C270 this year and the difference was just outstanding....) to my wife's CLK500

Cheap 17" rims are plentiful on the bay. At least you would be preserving the AMG rims from the salt and you wouldn't have to pay to change the tyres over at Kwik-fit! I bought a set of steelies for my 202 and Rob Parker on here was kind enough to supply me with the shorter bolts.
Just a thought.

17 rims not that easy to get hold of at a reasonable price as I have found out...took me 6 months of looking to get 2 matching 225 17" rims to fit winter tyres to the rear of my car at a sensible price.

Going to go for the 255/35/18 winter tyres on the rear as seems a more sensible option to me...Falken or Kumho....have not made my mind up yet!

old thread. but I have just orders and receved ready to fit Khumo KW-27 for the winter . after using them on a lesser car ( rwd) last year and was very impressed ,
I am using my spare set of standard amg 17s 225/45//17 and 255/40/17 and sending the 18saway for refurbishing so they will be ready in the spring with a new set of bridgestones .
Last winter the car was almost totaly unmoviable on the bridgestones when it got realy cold, but are brilliant when it is above 7 deg
