Fancy a nice 1996 R129 SL500 for £55k?!

In the paper this morning the reason given for the incredibly low mileage of this car is that the owner lost the keys!

I can't really see who'd pay that kind of money for a R129? No disrespect to the owners on here as I'm sure they're very good cars, but they're not quite old enough yet to be classics, the R107 is only just on the cusp of falling in to that category. Yes, it's cheaper than a new SL500 but won't have all the modern toys and the electrics will almost certainly be less reliable, plus seals and bushes etc. will all have aged.

If you bought it and drove it its value would nosedive and they're not exactly rare so I can't see anyone buying it to put in a museum. So, who's going to part with £50K?

Cheers,

Gaz

No offence taken - I think paying that amount of money would be crazy.

As an aside seals and bushes get mentioned all the time in the context of older cars but in 13 years I've (so far) only needed to replace the ARB bushes on my relatively low mileage 1997. It hasn't stood idle for 21 years though!

You're not alone. Apart from the mileage it strikes me as largely unremarkable, which constitutes a problem. You can't use it without wrecking its USP, but it's otherwise not special enough (limited edition, AMG/tuner model, first/last production, it's not even a good colour IMO) to support an appreciating value that would warrant it sitting unused in a collection somewhere.

Thus you're left with a great white elephant. I can see the usual suspects on the MBC getting in a froth over it so I have no doubt one of them will be buying it shortly and proclaiming it a "great investment".

In ten years time you'll probably find this thread when all the R129s are £30-50k, and this will be for sale at a specialist somewhere for £199,950 :D

With a spare £50k at that auction, this 1920 car for £14k-£18k would be more tempting.

Mine hasn't missed a beat in over 50,000 miles now , and it is the proverbial dog at the opposite end of the spectrum , with owners in double figures .

Somebody will buy that and use very sparingly .

The story about the lost keys seems to be true - my R129 was at M-B Guildford today for a service, and the team leader told me that they had ordered the new keys for this 81 mile car.
