I've recently bought some Bose speakers (Thankyou;)) and am compiling a CD of tracks with extraordinary clarity, or effects in order to demonstrate them.

What tracks would you recomend from a demonstrration point of view?

Leaving aside all the bass thumping pieces; Carmina Burana would play nicely IMO. Green sleeves can be effective too. A "freak entry" is a recent song by Sandi Thom; "I wish I was a punk rocker" (or something to that effect). When played on a very clear sound system, it sounds quite amazing. Bach's organ concerto (a.k.a. vampire music) is nice, but I cant remember the exact name, I'll have a look when I get out of bed and to my desktop :P

A good start would be "Time" by Pink Floyd. off dark side of the moon.

even better if you get the hybrid version but you need the right player.

Another cracker is a celion dion track. its number 9, but i forgot the album name and cant for the life of me remember the song title. Gets the ladies going tho!!

I think a good track to try would be "One Call Away" by Chingy.

It sounds amazing when theres no one else in the car and cranked up high.

Thats my 2p worth.

regards,

KJ

Danny's All Star Joint by Ricky Lee Jones was a benchmark piece for most audiophile systems back in the days we used to have real Hi-Fi with vinyl and needles :)

It will still drive most modern systems way too hard and they nearly all lose track of the bass

As an addon

something you must consider if you are demonstrating a pair of speakers is the quality of the source.

There's little point in trying to wow somebody with an mp3/wma based system as the amount of compression involved invariably reduces the dynamic range of the original song.

Sadly, the same applies to many "modern" CDs as studio techniques have changed. Most music these days is produced with electronic instruments which lack the dynamics and harmonics which make acoustic instruments such a pleasure to listen to live and why it never seems to sound the same on a studio CD.

Try and track down some "super audio CD" recordings or DVD audio discs played on a high quality player and you will hear an incredible difference

At the end of the day your speakers are only as good as the rest of the system and whereas a great system will have a decent chance of making poor speakers sound good. Great speakers will only make a poor system sound worse as the old acronym GIGO so accurately describes.

For clarity, Mad World (the Gary Jules version); listened to it on a B&O demo system and it blew me away. Pink Floyd are always good for showing off a system.

I'd also highly recommend "Breakfast" by The Associates. Superb piano and strings and Billy Mac's voice... sounds fabtastic and should give the Bose a good run :)

Music For The Driver

Firestarter By The Prodigy To Give You The Rush And Waterfall By Enya To Chill You Back Out. I Personally Like The Early Work By Enigma To Chill Out To Aaarrrhhh:d

Famous Blue Raincoat

Jennifer Warnes version of Leonard Cohen's "First we take Manhattan" with the late Stevie Ray Vaughn on lead guitar off FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT. In fact the whole CD come to think of it .

'Clubbed to Death' by Rob D sounds great on anything, and breathtaking on a nice system.

Remember Culture Beat? The first track on their album is an unreal combination of effects, including a helicopter flying past, ie in Stereo. I know it's Culture Beat, but don't knock it until you've tried it!! BTW I paid £2 for the album from WHSmiths!!

I think the best advice I have picked up from this thread is the very relevant point about clarity as opposed to the music itself.

Could you possibly please tell me what you decided on trying and what was your opinion?

Thanks,
John

House/dance tracks sound good.

Enigma is one of my Favourites – “Sadness” (various mixes) and Return To Innocence.

Enya ha some fantastic tracks too.

Try “Café Del Mar” by Energy 52.

Pink Floyd “Take It Back” is another favourite one of mine.

I have loads of tracks that I love listening to whilst driving and have them all in my car.

Did you just change the speakers or go all the way and install the BOSE amplifier etc.? Standard factory sound system/speakers in the W203 are pretty good anyway.

Did some rummaging in the music box (which is several piles of CD's carefully stacked in random areas of the house. some less accessable than others and with the priscision positioning of carefree flinging)

anyhow.

Celion Dion. Track titles, "I surrender", from the CD " a new day has come". If you have a subwoofer this track comes alive. and in the dark it really does have an effect on the fairer sex!!!

If you can get it and stand the self opinionted cak it spouts. Lee Greenwoods "God Bless the USA" from his CD "The Patriot" is a really good track and comes alive in a good system. And if you go to Las Vegas they play it outside the Bellagio whilst the fountain dances. Fab track nonethe less.

All the tracks from Roger Waters CD's " Amused to death" and " hitchikers" and if you listen to pink floyds "The final Cut" CD you will see who they follow on. Plus thats got some good bits in too. all will have sounds that show how good your speakers really are. and Pink Floyd/waters tend to use quiet and loud bits so it gets them having to work for a living.

Voices by Vangelis. CD voices.

"Bedshaped" By Vittorio Grigolo from his album "In the Hands of Love"

"Open Up" and if you can get a copy the full Vocal Mix of "Open up" by Lydon and Leftfield. Cracking track gives your speakers a deep base to play.

"Cruel" By John Lydon too. Both above tracks on John Lydons' Best of British CD.

And if you want to give your speakers a good work out, then the following:
Mozarts Piano Concerto No 21 in C.
Beethovens Symphony no6 (Pastoral)
Verdi's Grand March (Triumphal March) from the opera Aida, In fairness however this is best heard live at the Metropolian Opera House, New York. And its my ring tone!!

you really cant beat classical music for finding out how good your speakers are, and exposing any weaknesses. The explore the total findess of your speakers from low bass right up to high trebles and stuff.
