My E320cdi would not start last week. Called the AA who diagnosed the fault as being the fan assist to the gearbox, which must have had a short and was blowing a fuse. They disconnected the wiring in the ECU for that unit, and the car started up fine. When they reconnected it, the fuse went immediately.
I went to an independent speciallist, King's cars in Cardiff, who charged me 2 hours labour for allegedly carrying out the same diagnositic tests that the AA did in 10 minutes. The only difference is that they say the fan assist is not needed, and that I can just drive the car with it disconnected, whereas the AA say the unit needs to be replaced. King's cars claim they phoned the Mercedes technical advice line in Milton Keynes (if there is such a thing), who allegedly said it's not worth replacing the unit, and that no adverse consequences will arise from have the fan assist disconnnected.
Does anyone have any idea what the truth of the matter might be?
