Faulty Supercharger on a C200

Hi Guys

Haven't posted for a good while. Hope you're all well?

My dad in law has a C200 which has a rough whine coming from the supercharger, he's been told it's best to get it changed as the bearings are going.

He's not noticed any reduction in performance and he only drives it short distances as he's retired.

Anyone know if there is an alternative or, if not, where he can get his hands on a good recon or new unit. He's been quoted about £1100 + vat to fit a new one. (By an MB specialist not the Dealer)

Cheers

Bearings have been known to fail on the supercharger. The default answer is to replace the whole SC as it's the easiest and most profitable solution. It's certainly what a main dealer would do as they usually perform bolt-off and bolt-on repairs only.

However I'm aware of an owner that has successfully replaced the bearings on his C32 AMG supercharger. It's not something I would undertake but apparently it's a doddle for a proficient mechanic, with a press for fitting the new bearings. If memory servers it was about $20 for the bearings, plus fitting. Worked a treat.

Click on this link and do a search for "supercharger bearing" or "kompressor bearing" (or similar) for more information: http://www.mbworld.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=48

Go for it . It is a relatively straightforward job - take care , remember , you have little to lose , you can spin it up afterwards to see how you have done , even before you mount it up .

Check (measure) the journals and bearing housings before you start . Be prepared to chill/heat the bearings as required )

Surely there is a place the sells rebuilt superchargers in the UK. They are not a Mercedes specific part. I know there is a place in Canada that sells them. Here is a place in the US:

If you are just swapping out the superchargers, it does not appear to be too difficult of a job.

Here is another thread on rebuilding the bearings:

I agree with fred, just fit a new bearing.
