Hi fellas,I have a 1993 300SL R129 with the 24 valve M104 engine the water pump bearings are very noisey do I have to remove the cylinder head to remove the water pump ?
The dealer has told me the head has to be removed to remove the water pump.

PS there isnt any water in the oil so why remove the head ?

Regards

I did this job on a later 104 (HFM) engine.

Preparation is the key, as usual.

Get all the new washers and hoses, tools etc planned and ready; before you start.

Book time is listed at 6 hours, so I decided to get the proper Mercedes
pump for assurances on my long term keeper, because the original had lasted so long and I knew it would fit first time without problems (there are a few variants so you need to show VIN).

I am surprised that you have noise from pump; have you checked with stethoscope it is actually the pump.

Coolant loss is normally the problem.

Forgive me if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs, but with (particularly) relatively small-diameter internal hex (Allen) bolts which are prone to rounding-off the hex, it usually helps break the 'stiction' by trying to tighten the bolt a tiny fraction before you try to loosen it. If it DOES tighten a tiny bit, it's a bonus; it should then come out without difficuty. You may be lucky and they'll all come loose anyway. HTH
