Hi, I've just been given a 2005 w211 after my a3 sport engine gave up the ghost
but as with all old cars it has a few issues,
1, engine fumes getting in to cab from vents
2, juddering /vibrating sound from n/s door when getting it hits 30 mph, it sounds like the lock juddering up and down for about 4 seconds, ( I have rectified the the lock judder )
3, its stuck in sports mode (could be worse lol)

Now I have no idea how long its going to take to get a decent engine for my A3 (its in my uncles garage and family never come first) he has given me the merc to do with as i please, he also has a 2003 C220 coupe i could have instead of the w211.
Was wondering if any one has any ideas on if the fault with the w211 could be simple of do i give it back and take the coupe?

Thanks

I'm presuming it's a diesel. The engine fumes coming through the vents are likely to be originating from leaking injector seals on the engine, they are a very strong smell that escapes round the engine bay and into the heater intake.
The gear lever trim should just pull up, it's not uncommon for the plug to be off after someone's had it apart previously or it's fallen off.
No idea regarding the door though, never heard of that before!

Yes its a diesel auto.

Thanks, I've just found out it has just had a new turbo fitted so could the gasses be a leaking gasket?
If I keep it the car I'll look at lifting the gear lever trim

Thanks Cheddar

I pulled the trim up and sure enough the switch was not plugged in, plugged it in and now it works. OK I'll probably still keep it in sports mode but I hate things that don't work.
On a side note this has got to be one of the best cars I've driven, OK it's old bit it still is better than a lot of newer cars I've driven.

That's good, the easy and free fixes are always the best types. Yes if there is a poor connection or gasket relating to the turbo or exhaust area it could defo give the fumes type smell, just in my experience it's injector seals 8 times out of 10. Usually easy to identify as there's a "chuffing" noise from the offending injector area when the engine is idling with the cover off.
I'm also impressed with the way the 211's drive, so nice even by today's standards, a terrific motorway car.
Regards, Gav.

I'll have a listen to it, are injector seals expensive to have done

they cost pennies, and are relatively straight forward to change IF.... (big if).... they haven't been leaking long. unfortunately they can sometimes build up a black sludgey tar type mess around them that glues them in place.
If it is this that's causing the smell and it has got to that point i'd leave it to a diesel injection specialist.
could be worth running it past your local garage just for an opinion and quick look though

I'll need to drop it in to my uncles garage for some little bit and bobs so I'll get them to look at it for me
Thanks for your help

Not as expensive as

They're not as expensive as the long-term effects of inhaling diesel fumes.

Short-term, inhaling engine fumes will only make you lose attention, irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs. It'll cause light-headedness, make you feeli "high," and generally give you headache, heartburn, weakness, numbness, tingling extremities, chest tightness, coughing, nausea, and vomiting.

Prolonged exposure will give you lung cancer, kidney damage, and increase your risk of heart attack.

Get the engine fixed and, in the meantime drive with the vents closed and the windows fully open, for what little driving you have to do.

Is your will up to date?

The funny thing is it's an intermittent fault and when it starts I turn the air recirculation on.
I've had a listen to the email engine on tick over no unusual sounds I can pin point where the gasses are escaping
It's from the back right in the centre, not sure if that's were the turbo is

well just got the car back last week, the fumes in the cab were due to a blown gasket on the turbo and the juddering was due to a faulty turbo actuator. new turbo well recon turbo and all new gaskets and it drives like a dream.
