Good day everyone.....

My Dad has a 2004 S-Class. He Got a new aftermarket radio/nav/hands free thing.

Anyway he has been told by the installer he heeds a Fiber Optic Cable, he can't get one and tried a few places. So though I would as on here?

Thank you kindly,

Sudesh....

What do you mean he needs a fibre optic cable?

I am guess he has comand in his S Class which has an amp in the rear, which is connected by MOST BUS (fibre cable).
You will need a lot more than just a cable to get that working.

Need more info, what was in the car originally (vin number to look at options fitted would help) and what is the new headunit?
If it is a Pioneer/Alpine/Kenwood etc. then it may be tricky, if it is one of the chinese units designed for his Merc he may well have bought the wrong one, they are often offered as regular line level out or optical out, and should be plug and play.

But some info needed to be able to help?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I will get you chassis number now shortly, and yes, he bought one of those chassis units.

He said everything went dead in the car. So none of the OEM radio/nav setup works.

If he has bought a chinese unit that is MOST compatible he needs to remove the MOST connector from the factory harness and plug this into the new harness.

This image shows the optical that you need to remove from your factory harness and plug into the new harness......

I hope that makes sense?

Only thing I can say is, he has taken the car to 4 MERC specialists here, the NEW unit with all details boxed etc. And he keeps coming back to me saying the guys say it needs a Fibre optic cable.

I'm lost......

What is the model of head unit he has bought??

Let's presume he has bought one that is designed for his car?

It will come with a harness that daisy chains between the oem connector and plugs into the new unit.

Something like this...

This makes sure all the cables needed are in the right place (laymans terms).
However, the optical cable needs to be transferred from the oem connector in the car to the new connector as there is no available connector to bridge the gap.

So, as you can see from this image, the most/optical has been slid out of the connector and needs to be slid into the new one.....

All the above is of course as long as he has bought the MOST version of the headunit, which is the one he needs.

A link or image of the headunit would help a great deal. ;)

Not sure what is on the MOST ring that needs to remain to be honest?
CD changer will go with the new headunit, can't see upgraded sound system in the spec.? So not sure what is happening, but I have just got through a bottle of Volnay so maybe I'm missing something.

But post of the name and model of the headunit, it may make more sense then.

I'll get the make of the unit he bought later today.

I'm usually able to do all the Merc work myself, but with my healt issue Not sure if you read before, I find it difficult to do things. I was in a Coma for 4 months back in 2014 [i think] and still working away at trying to keep strong. Currently on 29 tablets a day. I myself own a CL500 and bloody car won't hold charge, keeps draining battery.

Just buy a new battery for yours. - Even if the root cause is some component that keeps running it down, a new battery will cope with it a lot better than an old(er) one.

On my CL500, a new battery was installed a few weeks ago. But problems still there. I did read on here there the Alternator can cause problems. It can drain the system? Or not charge it correctly.

I have replaced my COMAND with a Chinese Android unit which is non Fiber optic. GIZZE was a useful post...but, in this instance, not correct for your dad's car.

Ask any question you like. He doesn't need a fiber optic cable if the new unit isn't FO. He will need a loom to go from the head unit to the left side of the boot to make all the connections for speakers, antennae etc. I got rid of everything that was there front and rear and even added an amp although this isn't strictly necessary.

Is your dad also in NI?

You need a good auto electrician...you say you are in NI...one of the best auto electricians is in Belfast.

Yeah I'm in N.I,

Can you send me details of the auto electronics specialist you mean?

Thank you kindly

I agree with this, it was when he said a decent audio store had looked at it and said you need an optical cable, I presume they meant between the harness'.

Does the S Class have an amp in the rear as standard?

It can have a BOSE amp. or an internal amp in the audio gateway.

But, whatever they are they are all MOST. So, when going after market you can ditch it all or use a MOST convertor...but that is only to allow use of the BOSE...which is the weak link and the reason most people get rid of COMAND.

The new unit he got for the car has no make on the actual unit itself, but it says "My Car Life" on the box.

Can you post a picture of the box, showing spec. and also all the accessories that came with it?
