Hi everyone,
On filling up my E Class recently, I noticed the filler cap securing lead was snapped, are these easy to replace?
If anyone has replaced this I would be grateful for your advice.

Many Thanks

Not done one on an E-Class but usually it’s a case of buying a replacement cap which has the lead attached, which then slots into the fixing point in the flap.

The method of fixing varies between models and generations, but it’s usually a push fit. Just make sure you buy the cap with the right “fixing” at the end of the lead.

I don’t think you can buy the lead for the E class , or at least I couldn’t find one . Depending on where it has snapped you can buy a piece of rubber tube and insert/glue the broken ends of the lead into the tube . I got a few years out of that repair .

As above, could you use some heat shrink tube of the right diameter to join the two ends of the lead together?

On my W203 I discovered that after the cap lead broke, it fits nicely inside the spring clip for the filler door. Almost made for it :thumb:

I did this on my Vito (using two layers of heatshrink for extra strength) ... worked OK short term but didn't last very long. Glue-lined heatshrink might be better but I'm not sure if this is available in such small diameters.

I've bought replacement caps in the past for both my CLK & C Class, not expensive on ebay or amazon, hardly worth the bother of trying to repair them.

Don't blame me if it's no good 😊😊.

I did just this with my S204. The only issue was that the retaining plastic rivet used to secure the strap to the car was stupidly difficult to remove, even with a set of trim tools.

I've never managed to find one online for our Vito, at any price:

Ones that come up when searching for the model & year have the wrong strap type, ending in a ring that goes round the filler neck. It needs one with a strap that ends in a 'button' that attaches to the filler flap - the filler neck is recessed.

That sounds the exact same as the ones I've bought?

That's what our Vito has - I suspect it's a 2-piece fitting that's not intended to be removable once snapped together. There's a small hole in the centre of it though, which I thought 'might' release it if you insert a strong enough metal pin.

The strap is secured with this type of clip.
The centre must be pushed out to release the fastener.

So it's a bit like a pop rivet - that shaft is pulled to 'set' it, then snaps off leaving the hole I noticed?

The shaft is pressed in until it is flush to set.
To remove the shaft is pressed through the head to release, ( as you can’t pull it out)

Interesting.
On my 204 it was a Christmas tree type like this, and ridiculously difficult to remove. Maybe a previous owner had bodged it.

Hmm on my Vito there isn't enough space behind to push it all the way through (the strap is secured to the filler flap, not the bodywork). I guess you'd have to drill it out.
