But that's only because I think the pre-facelift w211 is greatest car ever made.

Profoundly disagree. But as always- beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Really depends on how you judge these things but if you combine engineering innovation, production revolution, developments which affected all subsequent thinking, social change and market impact on the motoring public then the following are judged to be the best
in order:_

1 Model T Ford
2 BMC MINI
3 Citroen DS
4 VW Beetle
5 Porsche 911

personally I would replace the 911 [ just a faster beetle] with either the Audi Quattro or Range Rover from the survey short leet here.

Saloon car rules out the Citroen SM (and the Beetle, 911 and Mini Graeme...)

The DS is a brilliant car but let down by the 4 cylinder Traction Avant engine.

Therefore has to be the BMW E39 in any 6 cylinder form.
