First Aid Kit

When reading the instructions of my one, the very first thing it says to do is CONTACT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES!

Yes, the kits are basic and certainly, if you've never had any first aid training, probably useless apart from a cut or bruise.

I have been fully first aid trained but would still call 999 as soon as I had assessed the situation as needing such, even if I thought that it was manageable

T I would say that if you could carry only one first aid item on you, it would have to be a tourniquet.

That's the reason why kit's don't include them - you can do more harm than good.

Hence also why a FAK will have the things it does - they require no special training to use the bits in there and so people are unlikely to come to any harm through the accidental but well-intentioned misuse of equipment.

The van was equipped with a rather comprehensive first aid kit. The brother later commented that when he tried to help the injured girl, there was absolutely nothing in the first aid kit that he could really use.

That reflects pretty much my experience , yes gloves are essential, but all the bandages etc seem to hark back to the old days of first aid training.

Give me a resusciade, gloves and a large dressing pack and you can cope.

been away for a few days, just wanted to say thanks for all the replies, interesting to see the path the thread has taken with the various useful replies and comments... thank you :)

We are well known for that... the 'are the students right' thread strangely went up north and had to be closed....

yeah, i think i saw that one and decided out stay out of it....

i have 2 basic rules when it comes to forums, religious content and politics should both be banned, because both will always degenerate at some point into an argument and flaming war (just like in real life) so better to remove the temptation in the first place :)

Thanks guys for all the info, i managed to pick one up off fleabay for a poltry 4 quid, as the info above, the kit does have an expiry date on it, once unpacked everything is contained in a "fold open 2 half pack" which is sealed and has most of the stuff above listed, like the thermal blanket, plasters scissors etc.

The one i picked up was a little out of date, but i'm not too worried about that, as most of it wont be affected by that, and i can add a few bits to it no problem as i see fit, at least there is one in the car now rather than just an empty hole !

cheers for the help/info
