have been told that it is nigh on impossible to fit the springs without the proper Mercedes spring compressing tool which is around £400 to buy, can anybody shed any light on this regarding if you can fit the new springs without the proper Merc tool or can you do it with standard spring compressing clamps or can you hire the proper Merc tool?
Thanks in advance

It’s not so much a Mercedes specific tool but a heavy duty, floor mounted one. Most garages have them, I’ve taken the struts in and have them change the springs for me.

I've used the normal ones like below for years without injury and they are cheap enough........a bit of common sense as they are safe enough too....keep them lubed and its easy enough...even easier if your have a powered ratchet or impact wrench.

You will also need a strut nut tool, I would just take the struts and new springs to a garage that has the proper tools. If a spring breaks loose under compression serious injury could occur.

That is the best advice.
My usual garage could not assemble the coil onto the shock and I had to take it to a merc independent who had no issue doing it
