Hi everyone, I drive a Red C220 AMG, yesterday I noticed that the paint is starting to flake off my bonnet in a few different places..... does anyone know how long the paint warranty from the garage is? Any advice greatly appreciated I’m totally gutted by this!!
Thanks Claire

Welcome to the forum.

If you Google Mercedes Opal Fire Red, you'll get the picture...

It's a known issue. Your MB dealer should be able to arrange complete respray of the car (not including bumpers and other non-metal parts) free of charge under the New Paint Warranty.

Be aware that it can take a few months to get there, as there's paperwork to complete and obtain approval from Germany etc, and then the car will be in the garage for a couple of weeks for the respray.

(Assuming, of course, that the paintwork is still original and that the cars hasn't been repaired or resprayed by a non-MB approved garage before)

hi thank you so much. It’s not a new car it’s was registered 31st Oct 2013, so might be out with warranties, so I suppose will cost a fortune! I’m waiting on my local dealer calling me back currently, I just didn’t think this would/could happen! thank you Claire

No it will still be covered under New Paint Warranty.

The trick is to find a sympathetic MB dealer, it's a complex warranty claim for them and sadly some dealers just don't want to know and will attempt to reject it off-hand.... but a good dealer will get you thorough this and the car will be repainted by MB free of charge. As per my previous post, it's a known issue with Opal Fire Red and MB are aware of it.

Thank you so much for your help and advice. I’ve done as you said and googled it, omg thousands of issues, think I’d have bought a white one had I known this before!! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my car, and it’s colour, but this is devastating.
Thanks again you’ve been great.
Claire xx

When talking to the dealer, I suggest that you make it clear to them that you are looking to submit a warranty claim re the paintwork, i.e. you are not asking for a paid repair.

And it would help if you also made them aware that you have Googled and realised it was a known issue.

Good luck. Please do let us know how you get on with the dealer.

Thank you Markjay, I will do that. Have to admit I’m not great in these situations, but I’ll certainly do as you’ve said.
And I’ll let you know what the outcome is. Thanks once again. C x

Before we get too carried away, I think a little more detail would help :
1. What colour Red is the car? Fire Opal Red is code 590U (on my SLK) but there are quite a few other reds - my S208 is Carneol Red!
2. Is it the paint that's flaking (normal complaint for FOR is microbubbling not flaking), or the lacquer top coat as on my S204? This will markedly affect the response from MB, see here :
Carneaol Red Lacquer Peeling, Let Battle Commence
I got precisely nowhere with MB so next month it goes to a good local bodyshop for complete bonnet and roof respray as well as fixing the other small area, will cost me £600 (which is cheap, the first quote I had from a different bodyshop was £1100!!).

Hi Chrishazle, thx for replying, I’ve just looked through all my documents to see what colour code it is, and I can’t find it.... everywhere simply says red... where can I find this info please? Thank you

Hi Claire, I believe the paint code should be on the "sticker" on the inside drivers door panel, at least it is on my E Class, if I'm wrong I sure more knowledgable minds will be along shortly. Best regards - Mark

I believe it is, its the "590" part that I understand refers to "Mars Red", that said, I'm no expert so please let someone with a lot better knowledge than me confirm before doing anything. Best regards - Mark

OK, FOR confirmed, Claire can you post photos of the paint problem you have so we can see if it's traditional microblistering, lacquer peeling or what.

Sorry, I may have muddied the waters referring to the sticker on my e class, this is for the OPs c220. The paint code seems to be 590, however as AMGeed said, a Google look up states both Mars Red and Fire Opal, so I would suggest someone that has a lot more knowledge on this than me could look up the "build sheet" to see the exact answer. Best regards -Mark

Ted is correct - as Mr Google will confirm, there's as many problems reported from USA about Mars Red as there are over here for FOR!

Hey you guys thank you all so much for your help, I’ll take pics and post them tomorrow. As the garage still haven’t called me back, I’ve decided to just call in and see them in my local garage tomorrow!! Thank you all so much xx

Hi guys here’s a few photos of my beautiful flakey lacquer on my 2013 FOR c220 AMG...... only came up very quickly a few days ago but after looking closely you can see little bubbles all over it feels pitted as you rub your hand over her! So disappointed
