Well after a couple of months sans the CLK and mulling over various automotive options I plumped for a 2001 Boxster S :bannana: Bye eek, it's a quick bit of kit!

Picked it up last Friday afternoon and have racked up nearly 250 miles over the bank holiday weekend just ripping about locally. No pics yet but will post some soon :)

Cheers,

Steve

Keen to hear what you think of the car. A mate is looking at these, and I'd live to pass on your experiences.

Well, ok, seeing as you asked nicely :p

I'll post some nicer location shots once I get round to it. Far too busy driving it at the moment :bannana:

It's my second Boxster, my first was a '99 2.7. I'd recommend that your mate goes for the 'S' if he can. It's a totally different beast to drive. 'Time Travel' is my best descriptive re its speed/cross country ability.

If there's anything specific you want to know about them, ask away.

Cheers,

Steve

Very nice - I've been toying with the idea of a Boxster S - on hold until the house stuff is all sorted - but be interested to see how your experience goes - especially it being 5 years old. What issues if any do you get, running costs, wear & tear etc.

Nice car - enjoy:rock:

Thanks Pammy.

I scored quite well on this car. One owner, 39k miles, full Porsche SH (same dealer from new) and every receipt filed away. I had it inspected by said dealer prior to me buying it (in order to get Porsche warranty) and it flew through without a problem.

RE costs, my 2.7 cost me only for a replacement battery and a set of front tyres over the normal servicing costs (£330 for 12k service, P independent). I had no problems with it at all. Touch wood, the 'S' will be as good to me.

What to look for if buying one? Cracked plastic rear windows if pre-facelift car, leaking RMS and a full SH either at Porsche or good independent and condition, obviously. No need to worry about rust - they don't! :bannana:

Cheers,

Steve

Welcome to Porscheland.

I sold my CLK 320 Cabriolet earlier this year and purchased a 996 Carrera 4. It's a bit frightening! 178mph, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds......

(but it doesn't have the luxury of the CLK)

PS - when talking about 'what to look for', you might want to think about intermediate shaft failure or cylinder sleeve slippage / fracture. According to reports, 5-10% of 996 and boxster engines suffer this fate. When I say fate, this is quite literal. It's a new engine at £7k. Ouch!
Still, I have lived a good, clean life and I am sure (!) that it won't happen to me!

Cheers, Paul. It's Porker number 4 for me. Started out with a 944 2.7 followed by a 968 Coupe, 2.7 Box, (the CLK) and now this 'S'. 'Home again' one would say :)

Re the slipping liners/porous blocks, wasn't that 'just' the early 2.5 and 3.4 units? Not heard about those issues on the 2.7/3.2/3.6 units. But yes, inter shaft failure does afflict some cars still, even the 997's. In Ferry I trust (mostly!).

Enjoy the 996 - I'm sure I would ;-)

...........Don't you wish that there was a forum as good as this one for Porsche owners?..............

Mmm...that does look tasty...came very close to stumping up the extra £££ for an early 996 C2 when buying the Integra, but just couldn't justify the doubling in service costs.

Maybe in a couple of years, when the wife takes over the Integra :D

Servicing charges at my local Porsche main dealer are pretty much the same as my local MB garage, ie about £85 per hour. I had my car serviced at a local Porsche specialist 'Zentrum' (these were actually the previous Porsche main dealer people), the cost was less than half, with a 'respected' stamp in the service book.
I took my car for a 48k miles service (this is a major service on Porsche cars), this cost £410 at the specialist - the main dealer quoted £800!!!

I always kept my CLK service book fully up to date with main dealer 'stamps'. When I sold the car (part ex), the dealer asked if the car had service history, and then never even looked at the service book! Exactly the same thing happened when I sold may last car.
I am now slightly sceptical about the value of 'full main dealer service history'. It may well be essential on a car that is, say, up to five years old - but after that time? Specialist servicing seems to be equally accpetable at half of the cost.

That was the problem. I'm used to paying about £50 an hour for both our Mercs, and the Integra comes in at a similar cost. A major service for the K20 engine is about £300 at main dealer prices.

Still, in a couple of years time, when I'm earning a bit more money....

Yes, I do! This is by far the friendliest I've been on :)
