On the odd rare occassion, i have floored the accelerator from standsill... the car takes off, but once it reaches the redline/rev limiter it doesn't seem to want to change up a gear unless i back off the accelerator. This being my 1st auto, is this how it should be ie normal?

No it is not normal unless you have it in 3rd etc instead of 'D'

Depends on what car/transmission you are talking about as to which answer i will give.

if its a newer model ie 722.6 or newer than most likely the MAF will cause this problem if its an older model there can be a number of causes.

more info please

I wouldn't red line it too much, and it is normal you should have to let off the accelerater a little to change anyway. Both mine do it anyway, if you keep your foot hard pressed.

My car is slow to change up 3rd to 4th once in a while.
Possibly a low gearbox oil level.

If we are talking old school then you need to look at all transmission inputs, mostly at control and govenor pressures. with age and wear these can become unbalanced, it should not sit on redline without upshifting

The car is a 97, c280 sport, w202. I only very occassional floor it, when i do it will sit at the start of the redline, unless i back off slightly...normal for this car?

Had the exact same problem on an E320. Turned out to be the MAS sensor!

It will sit on the redline unless you ease off slightly, and then the gearchange won't be 100% perfect.

Are there any other symptoms/tests to do to isolate whether it is the MAS sensor? Is it worth doing a clean of it as suggested in the HOW TO?

if the MAF is really stuffed then switch off the engine unplug the MAF sensor and then take it for a drive it wont run perfect but it should run a little better

My C180 (97) seems to rev to the red line too on full throttle in first and I have to back off for it to change, but this is since I changed the MAF for a new Bosch unit. It wouldnt rev anywhere near the red line before, so I can live with it. Almost every other auto I have had used a kickdown cable that you could adjust if that happened. I take it Mercedes dont have a similar arrangement?
