As I may have bored you with before, the FM reception on my ML is attrocious...Radio 2 occasionally and that's about it. The Head unit has the FM aerial correctly connected. I'd like to try swapping the lead for another off the shelf cheapy aerial to test. Where can I get one to plug in?

Thanks. But, the illustration shows that part 5 and 8 (the affected parts?) are somewhere in the back  Any more specific as to where i can get my hands on it?

Have you got an old headunit you could hook-up to the aerial lead in your dash?

Edit: Argos sell FM aerials for the home, but to avoid spending money, do you have a hi-fi or someother device with an FM aerial, you know the thin wire style not many people use because they're unsightly?

If you touch the plug on the lead to the socket on the head unit it should be enough to make a difference, even if the plug and socket don't match. If you're struggling I think I have one that came with our surround sound system which I could post to you if needs be.

No, it's an Audio 10 in there now....would be ideal as a tester wouldn't it?

The amps ar in the rear side panel and you must remove the trim

In order to test.
Tune to radio 2 unplug the aerial plug from the amp and using a pin just hold it. If the reception is much better you can work back to where this has no effect,, for instance where the aerial plgs into the amp.

The inner wires on these leads are very thin and break easily so if you unplug the lead that comes from the amp and hold the pin in there, if there is no change the break should be in the plug up front where it plugs into the radio

I have a spare Audio 10 aswell as the FM aerial.

:D

No, I just meant if you want to test the headunit, or if you want to have a go at connecting an external antennae (albeit intended for a domestic radio).

Since retiring I'm hardly ever in London - do you ever head to the Midlands - you're welcome to use either to test if you have a problem or not. Or maybe Jay or Ollie's GTG?

Failing that I posting the antennae would cost less that the head unit if you want to give it a go?

Ah, that's really kind. Wouldn't mind the antennae for a test - will send you my address by PM and will refund the post of course :)

Right, I've just dug out an AM loop (black), FM aerial (white thin), and a lead for a ZX Spectrum (white thick)!!

Had a look at the aerial connector on the Audio 10 I have, and it looks just like an RF(?) connector used to connect my old Spectrum to the TV, and hence the reason I'm sending it.

It doesn't fit though (!!), however as the outer area is exposed metal, I think if you touch any of the the above three, you should see an improvement in reception.

The FM aerial has a plug for connecting it to an domestic FM receiver. Feel free to just cut this off (but keep it so I can reconnect it later if required.)

MALCOLM - Does my plan have any merit?
