Fog lights on or off during the day/twilight/evening?

I remember getting told off by a Traffic Cop for having them on when I was 17 and haven't done it since, I now actually find it irritating when people do it in normal driving conditions.

+1 me too :D

I had a set on my first car , a bolt on set from Halfords ...

They were torn off when i drove between two cars on a roundabout and didn't notice the tow rope between them.

Never bothered with them again. :o

they can be handy on badly lit (or not lit at all)country roads late at night (wen theres no other traffic of course)
especially with deer, badgers and foxes etc about

Would you not be better using your main beams for that , to illuminate the road further ahead instead of the road 10 feet in front of the car ? Would give you more reaction time ...

Tbh the front ones have never dazzled me at all and don't bother me. The rear one is s different story though!

First offence should be a warning :)

Second offence should be for the OB's to carefully smash them with a small glass hammer :D

Bet you wouldn't get half as many people using them illegally then!

As all the above, they're called FOG LIGHTS, they're for FOG, end of.

Are they? Yes, I tend to agree but there are vehicle manufacturers who have the front fogs programmed to come on when turning corners when the headlights are on. i.e. when turning left the left front fog light comes on, and the right when turning right.

I personally don't see much merit in it, but obviously it is an option now on some new vehicles.

There's no fixed distance anymore. It's just "reduced visibility".

Think it's always said that, but 'reduced visibility' is defined later. Current wording is

114
You MUST NOT

•use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
•use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see Rule 226)

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

Or the other way round if reversing.

But only at speeds below 25kph

Your only supposed to use fog lights when driving in thick fog. i cant remember the amount but a friend got fined for driving with them on in clear conditions.

Humm, intersting thread, ever since I got my W203 the fog lights seem to come on automatically when the headlights turn on and I can't turn them off. I'm assuming that can only be done on Star?

It's troubled me for sometime I have to say.

Note: Before anyone says I can't turn them off from within the cabin using the knob as it's already in of the Fog light off position. I've had the car well over a year and a half so had plenty of time to fiddle.

There must be plenty of 'imaginary' fog in London as plenty of cars are driven with their fog lights on at any given time of day or night!
