I'm sure I'm not the only one thats twigged this but don't you just love the delicious irony over football policing.

Football games cannot go ahead without the police there to nanny the supporters and keep them at bay from each other.

These are the very same people who've been condoning the looting!!

Premier and Football fans need mounted police, vans, boots on the ground and in some cases riot police, along with helicopters, police escorts to and from stations etc...

Football fans need to take a long hard look at themselves and all the police manpower thats soaked up by their weekend entertainment.

One of the sad things about the average football supporter is they just can't get on the enjoying the game its all about their team.
I have some good friends in the south,Brighton supporters, and would never talk football with them because their not insignificant intellectual powers are scambled at the mere mention of their beloved Albion.
You make a great point, certainly one I had not considered.

There are two holes in your argument;

1. The clubs do pay a percentage towards policing.

2. Football generates millions, if not billions in revenue in taxes etc.

I do agree to an extent with the gist of what you're saying though.

There is the cost, and then there is the opportunity cost.

On match days in London I wouldn't be surprised if the commitment of resources is so significant that normal policing suffers.

Or it could be the England match was cancelled because the football supporters, far from condoning the rioters may have dispensed their own brand of instant justice.

As a matter of interest, what is your evidence for stating

These are the very same people who've been condoning the looting!!

Not enough-Football has almost become an all year round event destroying any potential of other sports flourishing

Football ? Football ? Surely,"Football is a gentleman's game played by ruffians, and rugby is a ruffian's game played by gentlemen."

After years of having to help keep the ruffians of Coldblow Lane in Deptford from getting at the throats of whoever their "club" was playing confirms the quote, as far as I'm concerned. That also included the Millwall Lionesses!

Mind you it was the late 70s early 80s & Policing was a tad different then.

At the end of the clip some officers are wearing "Riot" style helmets with neck protection. That was just after my time. We just wore the ordinary cork lined ones, they did bring out reinforced ones before the ones you see then wearing in this clip. The "PL" letters stands for good old Lewisham Police Station.

I'm fairly sure that it was stated in most media that groups of football fans in Millwall and Tottenham were patrolling the streets to prevent looting.

Also football clubs pay towards the policing of their matches.

The Tottenham match was cancelled because of their new signing........

What the man said....

However it's not fully funded and actually should be.

Grown men cannot behave themseles without the presence of the police - its basically rather pathetic.

Or is it something to do with social class?

How many police do you see at Rugby / Cricket matches / how many people do you see being arrested at these events?

Popcorn opened, comfy chair ready...

What is with some footy fans?

I've been to lots of rugby matches at Twickers (England v Scotland even) and despite all the supporters having taken drink, I have never come across one single case of fighting or the fans causing public order problems.

Plenty of good banter but never, ever trouble.

No segregation either. English and Scots in same pub at Wembly?

I sometimes think the Police are there just to stop folk walking into traffic, getting lost and having a pee in the wrong place.

It's because Rugby union is that boring, no-one can get worked up about it enough to have a ruckus.

Why do some people feel the need to have a "ruckus" over a sporting fixture.

Its just bizarre and very small minded.

In short its really a social class thing.

For most of them it's a release from their working/home lives and if they want to knock ten bells out of each other and no innocents get hurt, what's the problem?

And why is everything to do with 'social class'? All this football sniping that goes on is just jealousy, because people's own obscure little sports get ignored.

How come today's pet hate is football E Class? Has your copy of Hello! magazine not arrived yet?

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking!

I've been on QPR message boards all week and everyone has been desperate for Saturday's match to go ahead. And totally hacked off at the rioters for putting it under threat by smashing up some nearby areas.
