While I perfectly understand what you are saying about markets neither the Panamera or RS7 really has equivalent "progenitor " two seater sporty coupe's image  to be diluted by a "middle aged spread" version. :(

I dunno, the Panamera is effectively a 911 hatchback/estate, you can't get any more iconic sports car than the 911, which the AMG GT was built to take on. Whilst the 911 has rear seats, they are generally acknowledged as comedy rear seats not for use by real people.

What will be important is how the MB is branded/titled. Simply give it another name/moniker like 911/Panamera and it removes the issue.

Call it an AMG GT Touring or something similar and they're asking for a backlash, which is no doubt what they'll do.

What's not to like anyway? A GT that four people can get into.

The Panamera is a car in its own right despite styling clues from the 911. Its V6/V8 front mounted drive train is totally different from the flat 6 rear engined 911. Its evidently based on the ill fated 989 from the 80s. Porsche 989 - Wikipedia I would suggest that this may be different from what appears to be a cut and shut job on the existing Aluminium chassied AMG GT. Besides which, doesn't MB already have a lovely sporty 4 door GT in the shape of the CLS?? My guess is that MERCEDES--AMG feel the necessity to develop these "Boutique AMG" models such as SLS and AMG-GT and now 4seater AMG-GT entirely separate from the AMG tweaked/badged mainstream models. Presumably they have done all their sums on this but I just get the feeling they may be falling between two stools on this particular one.

Perhaps it's to add a little more exclusivity than AMG versions of Mercedes-Benz models, with aren't exactly unusual these days.

It seems there isn’t going to be a CLS63 from now on. So the 4door AMG GT is its replacement.... at a price. It looks nice though. I was never a fan of the CLS.

I love the CLS

Regardless of its origins, the Panamera is ungainly, badly-proportioned and extremely ugly.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ;) But I was wrong about the NEW CAR being a cut and shut job of the AMG GT coupe. It would appear to be just a CLS with a nose job.

A couple of videos of the concept car from Geneva earlier this year.

It has to be said it is a very nice looking car.. much nicer than a CLS (and more expensive of course).

Looks like a w219 cls with a new nose/front. Definitely the cls w 218 replacement and a pretty good job they have done of it.
