A 10p piece can be employed as a "cheap and cheerful" minimum tyre tread depth gauge. Insert the edge of the coin in the tread groves. If the inner dotted ring is covered you're still legal since its approx 1.6mm in from the outer circumference. Notice I said legal not safe since consensus now favours replacement at 3/4 mm or less.
