Civil unrest to this degree in a developed country in this day and age!??! Baffles the mind!!! I would have thought by now they would have all the trouble spots locked down by the army.

the army should have been bought in a long time ago...

It will happen over here soon...............

Have you heard the latest plea for care by the socialist leader (I think). He said that people should go home, watch TV and make love to their partners!!!! Only in France.

I don’t agree with taking an extreme hard line but what are the police and local authorities doing wrong? are the police handing out free alcohol, cans of petrol and matches?

Why don't they tell the french police that they're all English football supporters. The water cannons would be out and everyone would by rounded up in seconds!

I hope your wrong mate...

but yeah, to me the whole thing asks the question, why have they let this spiral out of control? something shoudl have been done on the second day to stop the whole thing.

It will be in the mindset of idiots looking to create something simliar in other countries.

I would like to see someone torch my car.

Ah the ghosts of the past. Harks back to the ugly 1950's Algerian war of independance and no French Politician wants to raise the prospect of the French born children of Algerians shot on the streets.

Maybe they should consider reviving their policy of the time of collective responsibilty and bomb the suburbs just like they did with Algerian villages suspected of supplying the FLN.

Jeez

Just read the report on the BBC news site. The thing that gets me is this bit:

"On Wednesday, police reported a drop in the level of violence across France as a whole, with the number of cars set alight falling to 617, hundreds fewer than the night before."

Thats a lot of cars!

Just look at what happened in Birmingham... The French have a serious problem, but I'm not sure what the answer is...

If i'm not mistaken, the problem is france is the people against the system, and the problem in Brum is different race groups against each other.

I'm sure there were similar issues like that in France, over here in Britain back in the 80's. Broadwater springs to mind, but i might be mistaken. Not sure of the history behind it all or how it was dealt with over here.

I dont believe in handouts and thats what these idiots are pushing for.

The fact that france does not represent the immigrants in thier correct proportion to its population does not help the situation. France has ignored the situation for a long time hoping it would resolve itself and alas it has raised its head.

I agree with madferrit - the situation over here is very different. i would not even class it as a race war but more of power and law of the land espicaiy with what happened in birmingham. What rape? If you read other forums, there is talk that this has more to do with the trade of drugs etc than the rape which formed the catalyst for the riots and it then became a contest of ego.

Race will always raise itself no matter what precautions are made and the fact that bliar is hell bent on copying US policy on detnetion is a worrying scenario.

The parallel I was drawing is that racism (or the effects of it) is the motivation behind the rioting in France, from what I understand - though I wouldn't be surprised if ultra-right wing factions weren't adding to the trouble.

Still not pleasant situation - as my boss lives in Nice and commutes to the UK on a weekly basis.

I work with someone who lives in France and comes over here to work "living the french dream" apparently.

Last night, I put the cat out, he put his car out :D
