One other suggestion for the journey south of Lyon is to exit the A7 at J16 onto the D104 to Privas, then to Aubenas where pick up the D579 to Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and finally the D290 along the Gorges de L'Ardeche. Lots of fantastic views, and if you fancy it there are some pretty impressive prehistoric caves worth nosing around too.
