Frequent stalling

My 96 C180 has developed a problem where when I press the clutch pedal or put the car in neutral, revs drop rapidly and the engine stalls unless I press the accelerator very quickly. Obviously, this makes the car undrivable ...

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Alfa

Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't idle at all. When I start the car, I have it either in neutral or in gear with clutch depressed. If I lift my foot off the accelerator with the car in neutral or with clutch depressed, revs drop rapidly below 500rpm and the car stalls. Once in gear and moving, if I remove my foot from the accelerator but leave the car in gear, revs decrease only slowly. However, if the clutch is depressed or car is put in neutral, revs drop rapidly and the engine stalls even when moving.

Thanks again, alfa

Sounds as if the engine ECU is not receiving a signal indicating the throttle is in the idle position. This could be a faulty/badly adjusted microswitch or possibly a problem with the idle speed control module mounted on the side of the throttle body. Apart from a visual check of these components and making sure all the electrical connectors are in place you probably need to get some fault codes checked out.

Thanks guys. No, it is not misfiring.

I'll get the fault codes checked. Thanks again, alfa

Does it do it when hot? Try letting it warm up, could be that the car has some sort of 'stepper' motor which ups the idle when cold and it isn't engaging. I had a Mitsubishi which had the same problem and was fine once hot.

(no idea if the C180 has such a system mind)
