Front disc wear

I had my original front brake disc's changed at 50,000m. They were still within the service limit but as I was having new pads fitted I decided to change the disc's as well.

Now just 20,000m later I have been told they are due to be replaced AGAIN as they are on the service limit  .

I questioned that the original pair lasted 50,000m (and still had life in them) yet this pair have lasted 20,000m, but their reply was that most disc's only last 20-25,000m.

Now I'm not the brightest star I know, but since the removal of asbestos from the brake pads have made the pads wear quicker (hence dirtier wheels) due to them being made of a softer compound, surely this would mean the disc's would last longer???

Any suggestions   ?

Generally speaking a set of discs usually lasts 2 sets of pads.

our last 210 did 44k on a single set of pads and discs without the warning light coming on.

We were told that the car needed new pads and discs. when questioned no one seemed to think this was out of the ordinary. We sold the car a few weeks later.

Could this have anything to do with the quality of materials used in the disc themselves?

John

probably due to the original discs being better quality.

I changed my orginal discs on my 190 at 90k and there was still life
in the discs.

Have you checked the discs yourself? cos i have experienced that
some garages change parts so they can get more money out of you.

But I guess mileage is not a good indication of life as it depends on
the type of driving and how hard you are on your brakes. cos if you
do lots of motorway driving you won't need to use your brakes much.

The disc's were changed at a MB dealership, as were the pads yet they still only lasted 20,000m ? Mind you they actually said my pads were low 10,000m before then so from them saying they were low I got another 10,000m out of them ;) .

70% of my driving is actually motorway work and I'm not hard on the brakes also my driving style has'nt changes so I'm still none the wiser as to why the original disc's lasted 50,000m yet the replacement's only lasted 20,000m  .

I know a mechanic who used to run the workshop at a main dealership (not MB) who got so tired of being told by his bosses to change discs that weren't worn out, that he negotiated a redundancy package. He now has his own workshop...
