If you put the original lamps back in what happens?

"when i take the led out the contacts have 12volts on even thou it's off"

But it doesn't illuminate the original lamps?

thats why the led is only slighly on you can just see it lighting up when u turn swith on it becomes really bright

They are on because there is a tiny amount of current flowing through the circuit - enough to make it glow. The same current would flow through an incandescent bulb, but is not enough to light it. You aren't going to flatten your battery because that tiny current will flow anyway. The reason you measure 12 volts with it disconnected is because there is a current source. With no load it will measure the source voltage - i.e. 12v. The reason you measure around 5v with the led in is because the led impedance (high) is pretty much the same impedance as the current source (also high). Hope that makes some sense.

You could try leaving it, and check after an hour when the canbus has 'gone to sleep'.
