Front numberplate fixing

Daft as this may sound, I've just acquired another CLK55 which has a big rubber block attached to the front bumper and to which the numberplate is then attached.

This makes the car about an inch longer than it needs to be, and means it doesn't fit the garage as well as the last one which, I'm sure, had a different fitting.

Question. Can I just remove the big rubber block and attach the plate to the bumber, maybe with some thin rubber spaces or similar?

I haven't got a lot of time to investigate this, hence the question and, yes, an extra inch in length is the difference in the car going in the garage and not.....

Looking on EPC, there seem to be about a dozen different front number plate holders for the W209, certainly there are AMG and non-AMG versions. (e.g. my non-AMG holder only protrudes about 10mm.)

May be you can replace your thick one with a thinner one?

If you want to post or PM your VIN, I can check EPC for some part numbers.

Have you considered chipping a section an inch deep out of the wall?

Not as daft as it sounds but....I reverse in and the waste from the shower-room sink is the problem, not the wall, so it's the front that's too long.

I could, possibly, get the waste recessed which would give me an extra two or three inches....

I will look online and see what I can see as well.
