fuel consumption

i have an e320 cdi on 53 plate . was hit from behind a couple of days ago an car is a total loss . was thinking of dropping down an engine size to maybe an E270 or E280 or even a 525d bmw . anyone know the difference in fuel consumption round town an motorway compared to E320 coz autotrader says its better but dont know what to take of it obviously coz its a bigger engine ?

I've had both the E270 & E320 CDi and in the real world, there isn't much difference in the MPG figures.

I can't speak for the E-class, but this morning I managed 49.2 mpg over a 16 run into work from a cold start in my W204 220CDI Blu-Eff Estate (with winter tyres on if that makes a difference). I was trying to get to 50mpg, but an idiot in a Vauxhall Insignia put paid to that (had to brake at the bottom of a hill).
