Hi All,

Having a few issue with the ol' ML.

I appear to be getting about 20mpg at the moment......down from near 30mpg:

Stuff:

Engine remapped to 210BHP
MAF changed recently
EGR cleaned recently
Major service recently

I am a very light footed driver and the remap initially made no difference at all. I am at a loss to explain the economy drop.

Should I get the intake manifold off and clean it?

Any ideas?

What engine temperature does it get up to?

i had similar problems with mine, once i cleaned out the manifold and removed the little swirl valves it made quite a difference to the economy also seems to drive a lot smoother as well.

I had similar done to my car yesterday, and the 174 mile back suggested the engine is better for it. Whilst I've not measured how much fuel I used in each direction, I did brim it when setting off in both directions, and there's certainly more in the tank after the return trip than there was after the outbound trip.

Temp stays at about 70 to 80 degrees. Are the swirl flaps necessary? Thinking about cleaning and disabling them if they are useless.

70-80 degrees is a touch low - ours was the same until yesterday. Should be just over 80-degrees. Thermostat most likely cause. If running cool it won't be quite so efficient.

An explaination of swirl flaps albeit BMW focused can be found here: What are BMW swirl flaps

I doubt they're absolutely necessary, but if damaged you wouldn't want any fragments going into the engine.
