First of all I would like to say a THANKS TO YOU ALL. (You help me a lot in defferent cases).
I wondering about the fuel economy of a w211 220 cdi.
43 mpg is the best result i had.( I am very carefull with the throttle:D)
In town I get 30mpg
outside town i get 40mpg.
Shall I need an injector cleaning?
Is that a normal one? What is your consumption?

I had an '07 220 and averaged 47-48 mpg on mostly motorway driving and it never dropped below 40 in town driving.

How many miles has yours done because my experience is that they improve with miles.

Important factors to consider:

  • Saloon or estate? (estate is heavier and less aerodynamic)
  • Pre- or post-facelift? (post- is 170PS vs 150PS)
  • Manual or auto?
  • Wheel size (drag goes up with tyre width)
  • Suspension (Avantgarde is 15mm lower, slightly better for aero)
My post-facelift 2006 E220 CDI auto Avantgarde estate on standard 225/55R16s with 75k on the clock gets mid 30s around town (although "around town" can cover a wide range of driving style), and mid-40s driven to keep up with the fastest flow on the motorway.

I tried an economy run - mostly motorway on my 47-mile commute, between 60-70mph but not silly hypermiling techniques like slipstreaming lorries - and got 50.5mpg.

Being careful with the throttle is only part of the equation. You need to manage your acceleration and deceleration. Look ahead to avoid braking as much as (safely) possible, as braking just turns fuel into heat. Fairly hard acceleration is actually not a bad thing, provided you're going to maintain the speed you generate for a long time. Engines are most efficient at turning fuel into power under high loads, so creeping the speed up can actually be less efficient (for the same overall average speed).

Make sure the car is properly serviced - air and fuel filters, clean, correct-grade oil; and make sure your tyres are correctly inflated.

Thank you monkeylegent and troon.
Mine is saloon, post fscelift(170), Auto,225/55R16s ,avantgard.70k miles.
Air and fuel filters are clean.
So shall i look for cleaning the injectors?

Just about run in then :)

Both mine improved significantly as mileage went over 100k by probably 2/3 mpg.

I agree with all the things Troon says, plus as you are based in Cyprus do you drive arouind with the windows open all the time or use A/C. I find using A/C is better than open windows for economy, in fact I never turn my A/C off

I had a fuel pressure sensor replaced under warranty on my last E class and this improved the fuel consumption considerably.

Sorry don't know enough re injector cleaning, but presumably it won't make it any worse.

What diesel do you use by the way, because using supermarket fuel over here can give me up to 5 mpg less than premium brands although it tends to be cheaper, but probably a false economy.

Yes I drive with windows open. I will try with aircondition on to see the difference.
Here in Cyprus the diesels are almost the same. Actually there are 2 different companies who have 2 subsitiaries.!!!!!
how much it cost to buy the fuel pressure sensor?

Re fuel pressure sensor, I wasn't suggesting you need to replace this. My engine management light came on a couple of times but the car still ran normally.

The fault code was for the fuel pressure sensor sticking open, overpressurising the fuel rail, thus putting more fuel in then necessary. Job done under warranty so not sure of cost, but don't think it was massively expensive.

The car should let you know if this is an issue. It just made a significant difference to fuel economy when it was replaced.

The other benefit of closing your windows is keeping all that nasty dust and sand out of the car :thumb:

My car has 109,000 (or so) on it. I drove to London on Sunday and returned Tuesday. This is a photo of the figures for the return. This included London traffic, and 75mph where possible:

So it seems that this is a problem.
I will check the tyre presure and i will open the a/c. I have a 50 miles trip today.
I will let you know.!

Renault12ts, when my car shows me 50 mpg it actually means about 45. According to Einstein everything is relative but in the case of MB relative to what?
P.S. My average is 46 measured at the pump.

That's pretty impressive.

Its True

Mine shows something like that as well but in reality i get about 45MPG.:bannana:photo.jpg
