Fuel gauge acting up

The fuel gauge in the estate has just recently started playing up. When the car is level, it shows the right reading (I presume) which right now it is between half tank and quarter tank.

When I brake, it jumps to the half tank mark and stays there. When I accelerate, it moves backwards towards the quarter tank mark (or sometimes even less), and stays there for a bit. Then randomly it moves back to the original (presumably) correct reading when the car is on the move again.

Would it have anything to do with the float in the tank?

Whilst you may have a float or electrical prob, the 1st thing i'd do would be to tip a couple of little bottles of fuel line/injection cleaner (from any car accessory shop) into a full tank of fuel, its amazing how much really horrid gunk is in an old petrol tank, like thick slime, & this cleaner does a good job of dispersing it.

Sounds like classic sender issue. Replaced with new on both my E500 and AMG estate.

Is it an expensive part to replace? How do I get access to it?
