I have a '95 C180, my fuel gauge has worked until today, it was showing a quarter full so I went to top it up, when I started it after filling up it just stayed at empty, the low fuel warning light doesn't come on, the gauge is just sitting at 0, like it does when the engine is switched off.

Does anyone have any ideas, has anyone else experienced this?

Thump the top of the dash to see if he needle pops up.
A known fault is that the stop pin that the needle rests on becomes sticky / tacky.

I had this issue on a W124 1989 MY. It turned out to be the sliding resistor on the float in the tank. Took it out and cleaned the surface and re-installed it. Works perfectly.

Thanks for both replies guy's

I had this too - never bothered cleaning the sliding resistor in the tank as it didn't worry me. I then drove in Morocco for a few weeks on E95 (10% ethanol fuel) and it magically started working again after a few days.

Could the ethanol have a cleaning effect?
