hi

i hear there is a fuel strainer in/near the fuel tank on a W124.....

can anyone let me know where this is and how to remove it? has the tank got to come out/fuel drained?

dont have a huge issue with it, but if its easy to take out and clean/replace then its worth doing IMHO.

thanks for any advice.

Derek

thanks - i guess its difficult to change/clean this then.....

on my petrol 124 the fuel filter is forward of the drive shaft on the O/S. easy to locate if you crawl underneath - jacking up on the one side and using an stand should give you sufficient access to change it

As Matt, do it when the tank is low,, jack the offside as high as possible, remove the plastic cover behind the rear wheel and un screw it

It's item 35 in the picture and it's the daftest arrangement you've ever seen. The strainer does become clogged with bacterial matter and other detruitous.

Just unscrew it from the bottom of the tank and clean it or cut it off and fit an external sediment bowl or strainer under the car. That way you won't have to drain the tank next time you need to remove it.

I've had the tank out twice recently to clean this item as it was well jammed in and on saloons you can't get easy access due to the subframe and diff.

Your tank strainer may look like this...

See the black deposits. They are bacterial poo.. Hmm..

The inside of my tank is now spotless after a good blast with the jetwash.

Starbrite's Startron Enzyme Diesel Fuel cleaner

Dieselman,

You really, really need this in your Fuel Tank...breaks down all that biological
goo so that it doesn't clog the filter(s) on the way to being burned!

AND regular use will prevent THAT from happening again!

Was your engine able to run with that blockage?

BRRRRGH! Don't think I've ever seen a fuel sock quite that funky.

OK, i've ordered the new fuel strainer.

Can anyone let me know what size Allan/Hex key i need to use to undo it? It appears to be pretty huge so i need to make sure i order the correct size (they seem expensive) as it appears the easist way to get it would be to order online.

thanks

i've read that it is 22mm - can anyone confirm this?

i have ordered one too i should pick up this week and i will let you know. hopefully it wont need an abnormally large allan key.

i have ordered one of THESE

A lot cheaper than a 22mm allen key @ around £20.....

should work like a treat - assuming that is the plug is 22m - pretty sure it is - i've put some paper against the one on the bottom of the tank and flat to flat it measures 22mm

i have ordered one of THESE

i can confirm that the above does indeed fit perfectly and I recommend the seller (fast delivery and excellent quality and price).

He makes these items himself (i believe) so may be worth contacting for similar style tools that are required for this type of job.

ok, here is the exact same fuel tank strainer as i have bought:

anyone know how this works then? apart from a gush of diesel/veg what should i expect when i unscrew it from under the tank? where does the pipe connect to it????? i cant figure out how this works as there is no connection for a pipe... it looks different to Dieselman's pic earlier on in this thread... there is no pipe connector hole or anything on either end....

by the way, these pics were found on the 'net - its not my actual stainer, although mine probably looks this bad!!!

thanks

got the tool too after your initial recomendation but unfortunately it didnt arrive in time so i could do it this weekend. Struggled to find a strainer too. motor factors dont stock it and MB do seem to carry it in stock.

You could probably just clean the strainer. Apparently the original (if yours is) have brass bases on them, whereas the new replacements have a alloy base. It may be better to clean the original.... plus a replacement is £11. I now have the strainer in my possession and its the same as the one pictured. It took just 3 days to come so should be hassle-free order.

did you do the delivery valve seals at the weekend?

no stayed clear of them. pretty sure they are fine on mine. think the leak is elsewhere. did fuel lines and glowplugs. will do a write up soon. pretty easy to get manifold off though. i would give it 2 and a half Haynes spanners for difficulty.
